Try installing the VIA usb drivers under windows. Does that help?

THEN I get the infamous USBDEVFS_BULK failed, but I think it's normal
after pppoa says Read from usb Canceled!
Messages from user space programs (Read from usb cancelled) and from
the kernel (USBDEVFS_BULK failed) can appear out of order in the system
logs. I expect the bulk failure occured
What does lspci give?
