[speedtouch] Re: R: Re: FC2 silver modem
Hi Fred, I used service adsl start, then, as the connection wasn't working, I did a check with check_adsl.sh. I kept the modem plugged during the whole installation process; I don't know whether this can matter. I recall the message that I get using the Frederic Ruaudel files: Plugin pppoatm.so loaded. PPPoATM plugin_init PPPoATM setdevname - remove unwanted options PPPoATM setdevname_pppoatm - SUCCESS:8.35 connect(8.35): Resource temporarily unavailable I'd like to know whether what suggested by Duncan Sands in his e-mail of 21 May Re:redhat9 and silver speedtouch300 could work in my case as well (I have a silver modem, differently from Frederic) and how to get the CVS version of the user space driver, as I don't have the cvs password. I would also be grateful for some instructions about how to insert this driver into what has been installed by the Frederic's rpm files. Yes, you should preferably use the command 'service adsl start' The script check_adsl.sh is useful to test that your connection is alive in case the 'persist' option in the pppd speedtch file doesn't work (it happens sometimes for me), especially when your provider stop the connexion every 24h (I don't know if it is the case where you live). This script pings some well known site and if all fails, it considers that the connexion is down and relaunch pppd and only pppd. Because in the case where the modem is in a bad state, you should likely unplug and replug your modem before the connexion can restart (I don't know if it is a bug of the modem or if it is a bug/feature of USB). (I have a green manta speedtouch modem for info) If you don't want to use the service command, you can use the script start_adsl.sh which is called by the init script. [speedtouch] Re: R: Re: FC2 silver modem
Here a some more details. It doesn't happen since I installed my new FC2 so maybe the problem have disappeared. But when I was running my RH9 with a 2.4 kernel, sometimes my connection stops and it was impossible to restart it without unplugging the modem. I always supposed that it was some bad manipulation from my provider during technical intervention that put my modem in a bad state because it happens very randomly and not quite often. The disconnection every 24h have never cause any problem, relaunching pppd always restored the connection with success. What I would like to have, was a soft USB initializer (a software that stop and start an usb device) but I've never been able to find one under linux. I will send more technical details as soon as it will happen again, but I hope it will not ;o) You're welcome, Fred Duncan Sands wrote: that the connexion is down and relaunch pppd and only pppd. Selon Duncan Sands [EMAIL PROTECTED]: that the connexion is down and relaunch pppd and only pppd. Because in the case where the modem is in a bad state, you should likely unplug and replug your modem before the connexion can restart (I don't know if it is a bug of the modem or if it is a bug/feature of USB). (I have a green manta speedtouch modem for info) Can you explain more what this bad state is, and what goes wrong when you are in it? This is a state where usb is reset and the assigned address of the modem is changed like that - with a speedtouch usb http://forums.ixus.net/viewtopic.php?t=4103highlight=emi+usb - even with a powered modem with ADI chip (I mesured the power consumption on the usb bus to 0.20 mA with this modem) http://forums.ixus.net/viewtopic.php?t=9536highlight=emi+usb I saw too the problem with eci usb modem (more in version before V0.8 and in PPPoE mode than with V0.8 and V0.9 version were usb transfer was enhanced) I know sometime the problem is really EMI because I can reset some modems (even powered modem) but not all by switching the light off in the room where the computer is. But it may have sometime a part in software like in previous eci driver. Maybe the problem is usb-uhci driver related? Every time I saw this message, it was usb-uhci related. I ggole a bit to verify if it was true Google give only 38 hits with 'already running port 1 disabled by hub (EMI usb- ohci' and 190 hits with usb-uhci. This one with usb-ohci and speedtouch usb may be with old software http://forum.hardware.fr/hardwarefr/OSAlternatifs/sujet-18184-1.htm In the case of the speedtouch usb, because of the bus address change, modem_run end and now we are in a state where nothing but resetting the usb is possible. The firware is still inside the modem so modem_run can't load it again. Unloading speedtch and usb-controller modules and loading again and then the modem is able to restart. I wrote a script wich when ppp-ipdown is run act as a watchdog and reconfigure the modem if necessary. It does have the advantage to work with every ADSL modem even those like the speedtouch usb and eci-usb wich need a specific program to be run before to be able to reconnect. Some VIA hubs hang when there is a babble - they have to be reset before they will do anything more... Were these problems with VIA hubs? Ciao, Duncan. Liste de diffusion modem ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB Pour se désinscrire : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Were these problems with VIA hubs? Not in my case, this is Intel chipset PIIX3: chipset revision 0 I don't know if it could be related. I have one issue with the motherboard and a PCI adsl card. The upload never goes to the normal speed. This is a very cheap motherboard, maybe some flaw in the hardware design or bios? In my case, I found the box in the street, so it was a good value for 0 monay ;-) Gilles Liste de diffusion modem ALCATEL SpeedTouch USB Pour se désinscrire : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
