My documentation will have hundreds of sections such as:

  ``item1``
  -------------
  notes on item 1

  ``item2``
  --------------------
  notes on item 2

I would like all of these ``items`` to be indexed. Is there a way to do
this without having to specifically add an "index::" directive for every
section?

I have investigated setting the default_role, but am not really sure how to
do that, or which default role to set it to. By the way, the project is not
documenting any Pythong API or other programming language, so I dont think
the .. module directive would apply.

Thanks for any pointers.
