Many thanks to Joe C, John Perry, Dan Aycock, John Blair, Richard Gosling, Don Slicker, John Reynolds. The general agreement is that the fan motor is dead and just plain needs replacement. The hunt is on, and I'll be on the phone tomorrow. Many thanks to all for their assistance and suggestions.

I'd say the motor in the fan has died. There's no break in the internal wiring 'cos the continuity tester says there's continuity. But attaching a battery to the terminals makes nothing happen. Time to go shopping (IMHO). Richard
