Actually here in the states the older system (and most trailers) was a
seperate light for tail, and a combined light for turn/brakes - (what I
have on my 40 ford and boat trailer)

Yep, even those were two circuits, Two bulbs in one housing - one 1157
which has two filaments inside (in effect two bulbs in one housing) - one
of the filaments was a separate circuit for the tail, the other was a
different circuit for brake/turn. A separate bulb is used for the backups

Yes, I see your point - our combined tail and brake lights use dual filament
bulbs as you state. But the indicator must be completely separate to the
brake - and orange as well - so John couldn't combine as you suggest.
