I read it - well got about 1/2 way through, when I was flying between Chicago
and Phoenix weekly - only read it on the plane, twas a good plane book.

Now with my increased knowledge of crypto, numbers, etc., maybe I should read
it again - I still have it (but my reading list has been increased -
Codebreakers - about Bletchley Park, Simon Singh's Code Book, and the book
about how the Crypto rebels beat the Government...

Were the music and the voices the same for the SF number as they were for the
NY number?

It's actually a New York phone number :)

Someone was going to try and figure out what the message said a few weeks

 Wow, that is really bizarre.

I'm listening to it now. In format and number groups
 (5 numbers per
group) it certainly sounds like a spynumbers station.

What's the likelihood a clandestine agent would use Craigslist and
PTSN to pass secret info? It seems a lot more risky to me than using
shortwave. IN particular, who pays for this phone number?

This couldn't be part of that Google Da Vinci Code
 contest, could it?

I ran a couple of reverse lookups on the number 212-796-0735...nothing

 came up.

 Jeff

This is so great! Just called it from the office- hope my bossman
doesn't mind the seven-minute long-distance...

My groups were the same as the ones that Douglas Snow posted, with two
changes: The third group was 12079, and the thirteenth was 01706. Not
sure if it changed, or there were errors on one of our parts in
transcribing.

Anyway, some things I noticed in listening:
There's a faint fragment of a woman's voice behind the recording of 1.
I couldn't make out what she was saying, though.

Someone stated that there are different voices for each number. This
isn't entirely correct, but there is a different voice used fro 0 and 6.

That's about all I can contribute.

I've been doing some searching on the central office that number is
allocated to. The only address I've been able to get out of it is 32
Old Slip in Queens. Mapquest shows it near the southern tip of
Manhattan Island. Another has it as comming from a different central
office, this one on W. 10th. There is a company, RNK, Inc.,(RNK
Telecom) that has the 212-796-0 number, but there is no other info for
them. Perhaps a test number?
