Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I heard the same srange message on my cell. I don't know if it is real, or if the NSA is watching whoever calls it. Craigslist has pulled it as of when I checked it this morning. They said they pulled it on the 8th. The question is : why would a spook use a landline number that could easily be traced? If the message takes 7 minutes to run through, that's more than enough time to find the caller and the destination. Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Thanks for the MP3, Jeff. I called this morning and listened to it. It does sound a bit weird...the recording isn't of a good quality to start with. I definitely tried to place the music and i'm stumped. Doing it via phone means you can set up the whole thing by remote - you don't need to put up antennas and transmitters and such, so both the sending and recieving party could be anywhere in the world. It would be less secure in the long run as records could be traced, but if whatever you're doing is short-term, this wouldn't matter. But by the same token, people scan shortwave looking for stuff like this. Six of one, half-dozen of the other :) Another idea we were kicking around was that with Internet access being as ubiquitous as it is, a person being observed by a third party using a laptop or going into an internet cafe wouldn't be as unusual as a SW receiver. Also, there's the possibilty that the person the message is intended for isn't necessarily in the US - so if you don't have access to or the ability to operate a transmitter, the message can still be picked up (and reception conditions would be less of a concern). When you called it (it was always busy during the day, so you had to call in the wee hours of the morning), there would be a brief musical flourish, followed by the announcement You have reached the Z-Line, the first and last name in telephone entertainment!, by what sounded like a professional announcer. Then another voice would recite a random joke, and hang-up. When I first started calling it, the second voice was American, and the jokes tended to be fairly long, and I believe even had some sound effects. Later on, the voice changed to a British accent, and the jokes became brief one or two-liners. I still remember a couple of the latter: What's nitrate of potassium? Half the day rate!, and Never give blood needle-lessly!. No one was ever able to tell me at the time who was behind this, and the number eventually went away. To this day I occasionally wonder what it was all about. I've Googled for the subject, and always come up empty-handed. The local phone company here had random names and phone numbers in the white pages highlighted or bold for a couple years. I got to noticing that the phone number was the same number throughout the directory, so I called it one day. It turns out it was a phone company number and you could pay extra to have your listing put in bold, italics, etc. I don't think it ever caught on because now all the listings are done in the same font and type. And by the way, this numbers line does not appear to be in Commander Bunny's code, and I feel no urge to check my tire pressure... I didn't mean to single you out, Al, but the line was from the WBNY page at spynumbers.com. BTW I heard WBNY a few weeks ago. I think I posted it on the usaswpirates list. I'm still curious about the code from the landline and the fact that every 5-number group has at least one zero in it. If I get some spare time this weekend I might doodle around with trying to solve it ... 73, Zack __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations

Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list AFAIK the lists of frequencies we find spy numbers on are made up by us, not the people doing the transmissions. If someone were to start a new transmission on a completeny new and unexpected frequency it would take a while to find it. True, fair point. This message on the public message board is like a pointer from someone which is available to everyone who has internet access. That's -sort of- like E03 transmitting a list of their frequencies at the end of each transmission. Hm. I see what you're getting at, and that makes sense. Then again, we don't really know what this even is. It's almost as much a mystery to me as Yosemite Sam. Well, the Commander Bunny / Bunker Hill Bunny parallel is definitely there. Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I got your message John. Thanks... I guess I should probably check and see if the list's set to not send posts back to the originator. It was a bit confusing not seeing my posts appear on the list, and then there was a reply to my post in which both my quoted text and the reply were blank! Looks like confusion on my behalf; sorry for the double post. Somehow I blew it; I don't know what I did but I managed to come up with a window that deleted all the text. Then I hit reply by mistake. Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list L.A. had a bunch of these voice machines when they were still relatively rare and otherwise used mostly by movie theaters. Another famous one had been around so long that it was called VERMONT from the former letter prefix, and indeed that's what you dialed to get it. You got a cheerful voice saying, Hello, you have dialed VERMONT at 10760 Rose, followed by a joke. 10760 Rose was and is a large apartment building in West L.A.. There was another one called Ben. Just Ben. I have long since forgotten the number. He was always very happy. Almost disgustingly so. By then the only letter exchange was the Catholic Archdiocese downtown, TRinity, and the only thing on it was Dial-A-Prayer, TR 4361. Didn't even have a number in the prefix. That's old. The only thing I remember on ZZ was some soft music and a parody of that old commercial, This moment of softness is brought to you by ZZZ, ZZZ! The one that was really popular with phone phreaks, though, was a General Telephone internal number that did nothing but run a loop, Five cents, bing. Ten cents, bing bing. Twenty-five cents, bong. (Insert appropriate ancient pay phone bell noises.) A test line they'd never bothered to turn off? General still had a few stepping offices and it was phone phreak heaven. -hugh __ Spooks mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks Help: http://mailman.qth.net/faq.htm Post: mailto:Spooks@mailman.qth.net - Visit http://www.spynumbers.com/ for complete information about Spy Numbers Stations

In format and number groups (5 numbers per group) it certainly sounds like a spynumbers station. What's the likelihood a clandestine agent would use Craigslist and PTSN to pass secret info? Anyway, what I found sounds like a numbers station, only it's by phone. I ran across it on craigslist of all places (actually, a friend of mine found it and passed it on to me). Can anyone verify what this is? The post in question is at http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/mis/158815074.html ; I'll reproduce the text below in case it gets pulled. The voices reading the numbers sound like - well, imagine the stereotypical ransom note cut out from letters in the newspaper glued together. Anyway, if someone could check it out and let me know what they think (or point me to somewhere to ask the question) I'd appreciate it. Maybe it's some weird telephone company test number or something? Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list Yeah, that's a possibility. Viral Marketing is a possibility as well, but less likely. Hadn't thought of the Google DaVinci code angle mentioned elsewhere, but I guess pretty much anything's possible. It actually took a couple of days for me to get this to the list - qth.net thought I was a spammer courtesy of gmail defaulting to HTML when I sent my original message, so I had to wait for the ban it set to expire. Anyway, a couple of us kicked the idea around; we pretty much decided that the idea of it being some kind of advertising was fairly unlikely unless the same number were dropped out to multiple cities at once. We searched and couldn't find any evidence of it having been posted anywhere other than New York. It's also not a very effective way of promoting something since (assuming they're doing it right) nobody should be able to crack it, right? ;) No idea, myself - it's still as baffling as when I first heard it. BTW, someone described the voices as being flat and accentless, but it sounds like each number is a different man or woman speaking it. RE: [Spooks] Need help identifying something weird
Visit http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/spooks to unsubscribe from this list I have a feeling that is going to be fairly easy to decode. The fact that every group contains at least one zero seems significant to me somehow. If I just had time ... I did call up the phone number out of curiosity. Each number 0 through 9 is said by a different person; however, every number is the same (all the 0's sound the same; all the 1's sound the same, etc.) Some sound as if they were sped up. Some have background noises or even background voices in with the numbers. I'm curious why someone would put the message on a forum that many people on internet can see, and have a phone number that anyone can dial. I suspect it's either an experiment in human reaction or a joke of some sort. Maybe it's Commander Bunny. :) 73, Zack P.S. Who is [EMAIL PROTECTED]?
