SIN question

When did the sprinkler manufacturers start placing the SIN on the fire sprinklers? I have an as-built from 1998. The AHJ will not approve my plans until I indicate the SIN of the existing sprinklers. However, the existing sprinklers didn't have a SIN at the time, I don't believe. Any ideas?
