I have 18” wide concrete beams extending 24” from the bottom of the deck on
7’-0” centers.

NFPA-13 (2016) 8.6.4.1.2 Obstructed Construction (5)* Installed with deflectors
of sprinklers under concrete tee construction with stems spaced less than 71⁄2
ft (2.3 m) on centers, regardless of the depth of the tee, located at or above
a horizontal plane 1 in. (25 mm) below the bottom of the stems of the tees and
complying with Table 8.6.5.1.2.

A.8.6.4.1.2(5) For concrete joists spaced less than 3 ft (900 mm) on center,
the rules for obstructed construction shown in 8.6.4.1.2 apply. For concrete
tee construction with stems spaced less than 7 ft 6 in. (2.3 m) on center, the
sprinkler deflector can be located at or above a horizontal plane 1 in. (25 mm)
below the bottom of the stems of the tees. This includes sprinklers located
between the stems. [See Figure A.8.6.4.1.2(5).]

I am getting caught up in semantics with the wording. Would a concrete beam be
interpreted the same as a concrete tee?

Am I allowed to install the deflectors above one-inch below the bottom of the
beam in accordance with Table 8.6.5.1.2 as I would be if they were concrete
tees, or will pocket protection be required?
