A new winner?

Did a flow test this morning. Static 94, Residual 16, Flow 369 gpm. The head of the water department was reading the gauge. No plans to investigate (yet). Think they can design a dry system in a wood truss attic on that? Todd G. Williams, PE Fire Protection Design/Consulting Stonington,

manual dry standpipes - grv cplgs

Is it alright to use standard grv cplgs on a manual dry standpipe for a parking garage instead of the tri-seal type made by Tyco? I have a fitter that is worried that water will be left in the std cplg after testing that may freeze. What did they do in the old days before Tri-seal cplgs? Thanks,

We weren't as anal-compulsive about liability issues in the good old days. And in the really good days, when no one would want to steal our work, this stuff was threaded. Flanged-thread 90's, all the stuff you couldn't expedite, let alone find, these days. I believe you'll find standard couplings

How big is the main?  What material?  How old?   Sounds like either inadeqautely sized pipe, partially closed valve(s) or badly deteriorated pipe. --- On Mon, 12/1/08, Todd Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Todd Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: A new winner? To:

The problem is a lack of practical field experience and an understanding what they're looking at. Most of those responsible for the engineering and design just read the report and have no idea of what the numbers really represent. I've seen it happen both ways. Someone thinks they need a

Could just be an old main. Did a project in Florida a few years ago with the following: 60psi Static 11psi Residual 380gpm Flowing Needless to say, not much to work with. When we cut into the existing 6 watermain to cut in a new tee, you could not fit a standard size orange into the pipe.

Just to play devils advocate where does the code say you need to consider anything else but the hypothetical .3/2000 for 600 gpm? The code also says you have to include the hose demands. And if you do this exercise for less than the total heads what does the area look like? Do you start with

Or about an area in St. Paul with similar residuals and flows but only 30 psi static with a significant university. Just really old 4 and 6 mains. Or the 7000' dead end that goes from 125 to low 30's and 400 gpm serving the waste water treatment plant. I tested every hydrant one day and it all
