Matt,
I don't know about the 2009 version of the IFC, but 2006, 903.4 requires
water-flow switch supervision, which I interpret to include the 1/2 alarm
line valve. I learned my lesson the hard way on this many years ago when I
got called on it by a fire marshal.

Read the exceptions to IFC Section 903.4. You would normally lock or seal the
1/2 trim valves and not provide electronic supervision.

I believe the locking exception in IFC IBC only applies to Dry,
Preaction Deluge systems. Wet systems still require electrical
supervision according to IFC IBC.
