My take on this issue: For standard spray upright sprinklers, the "Three Times Rule" applies to this situation. However, 8.6.5.2.1.8 states 8.6.5.2.1.3 shall not apply to sprinkler piping less than 3" in diameter. I think the language was changed because the "Three Times Rule" was added.
