Our state Code requires plans AND calculations be prepared when filing for
permit. Don't most or all?
So our various MEP's have gone and obtained hydraulic programs.
In some (being generous here) cases, we have mediocre plans being supported
by similar calculations.
These are being prepared by
In MA the plans and calcs are required for building permit, but not
necessarily in CT. Dots and lines on an outdated floor plan will
suffice for that phase and the rest can come when the mechanical
permit is required. Hey, but at least MA has the discipline right on
their stamp; I wish all
Mostly Todd, but not always.
The plans on my table have a mech stamp on them.

Oh, and they mandate hard-piped armovers off the top. OK! Gotcha!

In MA the plans and
submitting that form will certainly help you vent BUT unless someone
dies or something falls down, it's unlikely much will happen to the
PE. At least based on relatively recent and granted only one state,
but a PE rejected plans two of the many listed deficiencies were: you

Did anyone notice a surge in MEP firms performing hydraulics in the past few
years?

I think sprinklers are now known as 21.xx.xx (it's a six-place number
system). We had it all figured out and then CSI went and TOTALLY
mucked it all up. This, of course, is how they stay

Making the corporate train move takes a lot of effort, too many committees
and others to push along to get the updates
or AHJs, bring up the engineering problem. Suggest they
use someone else for fire protection on their next project. Teach them that
sprinkler design is NOT a branch of plumbing design.

As a member of the engineering community I completely agree.
