That translates to rods shall be perpendicular to the pipe, clarified
in the 2007 edition. This is one of those rare situations where the
2002 ed Sprinkler Handbook got it wrong.

Does anyone out there know of the/a specific code requirement of the rod
supporting X-mains or branchlines oriented perpendicular to the slope of the
roof or ceiling? I seem to recall a requirement that these hangers must be
in a vertical orientation to prevent gravity from “pulling the pipe down
