7.9.0 has not shown similar errors. It has been running well for 5 days
now. 7.8.1 then system corruption beyond LIBRARY.DB that was fixed on
upgrade?

/Opt should be under / since no separate mount? This is a Qnap and I
have never touched the filesystem parameters. What are ball park
recommendations for /tmp space and / to run LMS? If this is the
problem I assume I will have to do a system rebuild to get more space
from the RAID 1 volume /share mount (2-Disk system).

For the moment I wouldn't worry to much about the cause of the
corruption. It happens. Just shut down LMS, delete the file, restart.

Should this kind of problem occur more often, then it's probably time to
investigate the root cause.

BTW: some of your partitions are rather small (in particular /tmp).
Where is your library.db stored? If /opt is indeed part of /, then
there's only 14MB left. Not enough for LMS.

My music folder was fine. So scanner probably caused it?

Does this:

indicate a new db was created?

No, it only indicates that there is no music data in the database. When
a new db is created, then of course you would get it. But also if you
deleted its content manually, if the scanner crashed before it actually
stored any data, if your music folder was empty etc.

I must silence that warning... it's confusing too many people.

months ago but could that have lead to 5/30 corruption? Thanks!

Unlikely, but not impossible.
