IMO, ReplayGain is an absolute must with a digital music player. Just make sure that you choose "Smart Gain" in your ReplayGain settings so if you are playing random tracks it uses track values and album value when playing a full album. ---

The scanner always automatically loads the Replay Gain tags from my FLAC files (for both track and album). Replay Gain gives a good indication of relative dynamic range, referred to the reference level of -14dB. I find that the tracks with the better range have a Replay Gain of around 0 (the ref

There are plugins to create and use custom tags; take a look at Custom Scan and Custom Browse. You'd need to measure your files and create DR values using other software (foobar2000 with optional "Dynamic Range Meter" component can do it), then store this value in a custom file tag. Not a trivial
