Disc Number is not a catalogue or description identifier, it refers to which CD in a numbered set as is Disc 2 of 3 for Billy Joel's Greatest hits. I would image that 254 might very well be a limit as I can't even think of a CD bundle with 254 CDs in the set much less 2903. I would use the catalogue number field or some other description field to label and sort them.
