Yes, that was the problem only I had some always_direct allow lines
later in the config that must have been overriding the never_direct -
I put some explicit denies in the always_direct lines and it worked

I have many users using squid2.6 stable18 version. There are many

the cachedir is:
cache_dir aufs /var/spool/squid 2 28 256
the file system is reiserfs mounted with options
notail,noatime

You may have a better luck in a tproxy related list/forum. Your problem
is with the tproxy kernel component, not Squid.
