SQUID [12/13] Open Process: Communication for Liberation
/ The Squid List /-- Open Process: Communication for Liberation Tuesday, December 13 7:30 $5-15 sliding scale (no one turned away for lack of funds) / Event Description /--- Open Process Series: Communication for Liberation-Panel Discussion Conversation Tuesday, December 13 - 7:30pm Graphics and logos have been used in social movements throughout history to mobilize, incite, and encourage discussion and continue to be some of the most effective tools for mass distribution and education. Join us for a lively discussion about critical issues in movement design, iconographic symbols, and radical graphics with experts in the fields of design and communication. This Open Process Series invites you to help us understand and shape our upcoming installation in Intersection's Gallery, Battle Emblems, scheduled for 2006. Panelists include: Lincoln Cushing, UC Berkeley's Bancroft Library and the Ethnic Studies Library; Nadia Khastagir, Design Action; Juan Fuentes, Mission Grafica. The evening will be moderated by Favianna Rodriguez, Tumis Design. BATTLE EMBLEMS February 1 - March 25, 2006 This new exhibition takes a look back to a thrust in the history of graphic arts that envisioned and constructed symbols to encapsulate the ideas, beliefs, and goals of various domestic social movements of the last century, with a focus on the past forty years. By juxtaposing a historical survey of some of the most important and enduring symbols of these movements (such as the peace sign, the United Farmworkers bird, the Ecology Symbol, the Black Panther), as well as some lesser known graphics from labor and union movements with new work created by local artists and designers, our hope is to educate and inspire conversation about the role that art and design can play in helping to define and mobilize action and change today, and making publicly visible the desire for justice and equity. Participating artists include Favianna Rodriguez Giannoni, Dan Hamaguchi, Choppy Oshiro, Mark Pearsall, Yaeger Moravia Rosenberg, Jessica Tully, and Marcelo Viana. INTERSECTION FOR THE ARTS is celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year. Intersection is San Francisco's oldest alternative art space and provides a place where provocative ideas, diverse art forms, artists and audiences can intersect one another. At Intersection, experimentation and risk are possible, debate and critical inquiry are embraced, community is essential, resources and experience are democratized, and today's issues are thrashed about in the heat and immediacy of live art. We depend on the support of people like you. Please help ensure that Intersection is around for 40 more years and become a Member today.
