This Sunday, July 2, 2006 from 6-8 pm, the Speakeasy Reading Series will feature four talented local poets and performers: Mack Dennis, Aimee Suzara, Michael Molina, and Jimmy Thong Tran. Enjoy beverages and snacks from the cafe while the performers feed your mind and soul... The Speakeasy Reading Series is hosted monthly by Bay Area-based writer Regan Douglass. MORE ON THE PERFORMERS Mack Dennis Mack Dennis is an award winning poet/actor. He is a six-time poetry slam champion. He's been a member of national poetry slam team San Francisco, twice with team Oakland, San Jose, Berkeley, and Long Beach. He performed his one man show, 'Raising Sane' at the Oakland Metro Theater and Café Van Kleef in December, 2005. A spoken word fellowship winner of the Oakland Cultural and Arts Department, he received a grant from the city of Oakland to perform his one man show, 'Raising Sane'. Mack has published three books of poetry and recorded a CD of his work. In 2005 he played the role of Charlie in the Ellis Berry stage play: 'Don't Call Me Nigger.' On June 15, 16, and 17th, 2006, he was seen playing, 'Jay Cat' and 'Smoking Timmy' in The San Francisco Recovery Theater production of "The Spot' at the Live Oak Theater in Berkeley. Aimee Suzara Filipino-American writer/performer Aimee is a member of Kreatibo, a queer [EMAIL PROTECTED] arts collective which produced the award-winning play Dalagas and Tomboys: A Family Affair. A former member of multi-ethnic group Dancers Without Borders and a Mills College M.F.A. candidate, Aimee's current work-in-progress, entitled Pagbabalik (Return), recently received a Zellerbach Community Arts Grant and was selected for CounterPULSEs 2006 Emerging Performance Festival . Aimee's work also includes a track on the recently-released Eye of the Storm CD benefiting the survivors of Hurricane Katrina, performances at festivals such as Apature, the Radical Performance Festival, and the UN World Environment Day Voices Rise Up! and various universities, conferences and panels, where she often speaks about the intersection of art and social justice activism. As an arts educator, Aimee has facilitated workshops with Art in Action, Youth Speaks and in high schools throughout the Bay Area. Check out her upcoming writing/ performance workshops at Epic Arts in Berkeley, and a work-in- progress of her play this Fall at La Pena Cultural Center. Michael Molina Born and raised in New Orleans, Michael Otieno Molina is a published author, performance artist, and educator residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Michael is coordinator of the ROOTS project, which facilitates high school student's personal healing through creative writing and performance. A Bay Area poetry slam champion, Michael has self published Purgatory Stories, a novella and performance piece set in the rich cultural landscape of New Orleans before the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina.
