Sight and Sound Series: Performative Cinema

Friday, August 8th

8pm

$7-10 sliding scale, no one turned away for lack of funds

----> Event Description <-----------------------------------------------

Tonight’s show features three ensembles that engage in live cinematic manipulation and sonic
experimentation: Wet Gate, the Overdub Club, and the trio of Maximillian (film), Jason
Stamberger (electronics) and Liz Albee (trumpet).

Wet Gate performs pieces for multiple 16mm sound projectors as a "band", the machines and
films as musical instruments: collaging projected images and optical audio tracks from film loops and
fragments, using electronic effects to sample and delay the films' sounds, slowly ripping the
stitching out from between the soundtrack and image coupled in the film material. By rearranging the
"officially" coupled audio and image, Wet Gate re-positions them in an effort to examine both
image and sound separately and together.

The Overdub Club features 16mm multi-projector live improvisations by SF filmmakers Thad
Povey and Alfonso Alvarez with live music by Mark De Gli Antoni and Lucio Menegon. The
visuals come from a wide range of sources including newsreels, industrial films and cult feature films,
and have been hand-manipulated by contact printing, ray-o-gram techniques, hand-processing and
toning for a kaleidoscope of colors and effects. The music is structured around original music by De
Gli Antoni and Menegon and collaborative "musique concrete" that incorporates audio from the
16mm projectors.

Some people may be (and some still are) confused that the name of the venue is a street
address at which the venue isn't. Now the street address "21 Grand Ave." no longer exists.
People are still confused. Anyone who can come up with a novel, effective way at alleviating the
confusion (apart from a name change -- we're not doing that) that we implement will win a special
prize.
