All OLPC OS releases including 8.2.1 have an annoying issue, where
activities can trash sound mixer settings. The result is that all
Sugar activities lose the ability to play sound (they are muted) and
sugar's volume control does not fix it. And unfortunately this becomes
a very common issue

What it sounds like to me is that I will get read-only access to
/proc/mounts and to files and directories on removable media connected
to the USB ports. I can use ordinary Python IO to list directories
and read files and find out what is mounted. I can continue to use
the datastore
