Re: [Sugar-devel] [PATCH Log v2] Don't update search results every keystroke

2012-04-13 Thread Gary Martin

May be for consistency is better add the timeout. Anyway, if the user press
enter the search is done too.

Yes, other approaches could be to:

- not to search until the 2nd (or perhaps 3rd) characters are typed

- a slightly deeper but user invisible solution could be to delay longer for
short strings, so for 1st character the timeout delay is twice the usual
default?

Having said the above, I've not yet hit this issue when searching the logs
during my years looking through logs I see here on the XOs during normal
usage/testing, the display of a one character search seems pretty
instantaneous. What log is it that is getting so huge?

Any one know what the current delay is on the home view search, I've not looked
at the code yet but feels like a 2sec timeout.

I am not sure about changing the color in the entry. Is a nice feature,
but is not used in any other place (in Sugar).

Yea, -1 for colour change, we don't use that any where else in Sugar, colour is
usually reserved to indicate user ownership. If the implementation has a count
of the search hits it would be nice to show the number of matches in the
toolbar, but we are a little short of space unless the advanced features
(Delete log, Log collector) in the cog secondary toolbar are moved into the
Activity secondary toolbar (Log collector should certainly be treated as a
save/export type feature as it just zips up log files into a Journal entry).

 Anyway, this is a very
special activity, more useful for hacking and testing than as a educative
 tool.
What do you think, Design Team?

 Gonzalo

PD: Yes, I know, hacking and testing is educative too :)

Mmm... I'm not sure about this. If the user press just the a and the
delay time is expired it will consume too much CPU.

Besides, what is a delay time accordingly for children? I mean, maybe
for a six-year-old kid 2 seconds is not enough and for a
 twelve-year-old kid is too much.

 I don't know. Personally, I don't like this approach :)

This segregation is not  so 'harmonic'.

   Yeah, thats right...

Would this be a situation where a global emblem could be applied to the
Activity icon of globally sourced Activities?

You mean having a badge painted on activity icons for activities that
came from the Sugar Network? It might be the way if we decide to have
both kinds activities (local and from Sugar Network) in one list.
Right now, it is not clear for me.

And shouldn't the Home view options be harmonized with the filters we
  have
in the Journal?
Then one could view all in a list by removing the favorites toggle, or
filter the favorites by the menu of filters.

Originally, the intention was having Sugar Network icon as a 2nd/3rd
icon in Home view (not in activities tray how it is implemented right
now). The problem was (it is possible but not trivial) with setting up
interactions between Sugar Network client application (which is local
Web application) and Sugar Shell, also, making it easy to run Sugar
   Network client in standalone mode.

But maybe having exactly Sugar Network view embodied to Home, is the
right way to go. We can, reserver a place for Sugar Network icon in Home
view and move client there after completing more needed work.

The original problem is, Sugar Network exists in parallel with F1/F2/F3
   views:

This is a key feature, which suggests that one always has the relevant
Sugar Network services at hand (nomodes), at least as a design goal.

Yeah. For example, I'm not quite happy with current implementation when
Sugar Network icon is in activities tray: it is not an activity (but
rather a general service) and, e.g., it is hard to fast switch between
Sugar Network view and current activity.

Global features could be revealed from a button in the Neighborhood view
toolbar, or triggered by touching the Neighborhood view icon (a subsequent
touch would reveal the traditional Neighborhood).

Group level features could be revealed from 'project or thread' icons in
 the Group view field.

If I got you you right, you are talking about:

If we have the current status quo:

    * F1, global view
    * F2, group view
    * F3, local/personal view

And need to embody Sugar Network to basic Sugar Shell UI,
we can scatter Sugar Network UI between these three levels?

    * F1, a toolbar button (or a subsequent touch for frame button)
to switch between current F1 view and Sugar Network view with
exposing all the content accessible globally (if we are connected
      to the server)
    * F2, the same switch mechanism for group related functionality (if
it will exist) of Sugar Network
    * F3, the same switch mechanism to see Sugar Network content
      accessible in off-line

Offline copies would be identified with badges in the Journal and Home
views.  Filters could segregate them if desired.

+1, it should be really useful to save screen space, even for setting
off-line/on-line mode, e.g., if cursor is hovering over the left-bottom
corner of the activity icon, UI might expose possibility to set this flag.

When offline copies are created from a Global-or-Group-view-triggered
screen, a notification like the download notification would offer to take
you to the new object's local instance for verification or immediate
 action, if desired.

From one side, having an alert (like with downloads from Browse) is not
needed all time. The SN client library keeps a cache of bundles and if
you started the activity, you are trying to make off-line accessible,
recently, the process will be immediate.

But some info should be given of the downloading going on when
launching an uncached activity. Perhaps show some progress bar in the
activity splash screen?

 From another side, alert
might be useful if we need to expose the fact that user is going to
persistently take n bytes of disk space. But, if we will expose those
n bytes somewhere in the UI (for X Home mode, in popup palette), we
don't need alerts (might be annoying) at all.

Also we don't need alert to to take you to the new object's local instance.
Because the only difference between remote and local activities is a
badge, i.e., being off-line user will find activity exactly in the same
place where he made it off-line being on-line.

An interim modal version of the Sugar Network may seem to be an efficient
construction plan, however, I think that it could severely, and subtly,
limit innovation and integration of the design--if not in the minds of
developers, certainly in the minds of many

Yep, I logged out, chose Sugar instead of Gnome at the login, and
Dr.Geo launches fine! And it looks greatly improved, especially at the
UI.

So it just doesn't seem to run when launched within sugar-emulator.

Yea, -1 for colour change, we don't use that any where else in Sugar,

Well, my patch changes the color and uses Key for new search results
because of this comment in the ticket[1]:

To borrow what seems to be a common (but not necessarily the most
user obvious?) Sugar search box approach, we likely should return new
search results in Log only when the Enter key is pressed, and
somehow indicate when no results are returned as well.

I thought that search with Enter was a kind of standard, so I used it
in my patch. About colors, I didn't know what to do to show that were
no results, so I proposed this approach (stolen from Firefox's search
bar)

With these said, I will do what you say in the new patch :)

It can be downloaded an tested from http://drgeo.eu.

In order to access your POT file, it requires creating yet another
login. This will discourage the casual localizer, who already has
accounts on more systems than they can keep track of as they are
language-oriented, not project-oriented and therefore migrate where
the strings are . I would strongly suggest that you make the POT
publically available without login.

https://gforge.inria.fr/scm/viewvc.php/*checkout*/drgeo2/i18n/po/DrGeoII.pot?root=istoa

We host the Etoys-embedded version of Dr. Geo on Pootle (in about
50-60 langs) with the rest of Etoys, there is always the possibility
of picking up some matching strings between your standalone 2.04 and
the older eToys embedded version we host. Transferring those matching
strings (with obviously identical context) would be good for the
version of the standalone that we host in ASLO. Please send me the
POT or make it available without login and I'll look into it for you.

Probably not.

The immediate problem you ran into is that by logging in remotely, you are not
in the same DBus session as the running Sugar instance. That could be worked
around by setting the DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS environment variable.

But I doubt this would help you running the activity remotely. Sugar very much
assumes an activity runs on the same host as the X server, that is, locally.

About the only way to run Sugar remotely is via VNC. But then, why bother?
VirtualBox works fine. What is the actual problem you want to solve?

I want to work on an application that I can not run via jhbuild in my
Debian desktop machine because another problem (something related with
python-abiword - I've already sent an email asking you about this).

So, as I have a XO machine with myself I want to run the Write
Activity from this one but I want to use my Debian system to develop
and use it. That is why I was trying to run it from ssh -X

The XO is not in the same room that my Debian machine because of
wireless signal issue :(

I could!

I had to disable NetworkManager:

/etc/init.d/NetworkManager stop

and add the IP address by myself:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.117

That's all!

I have a 19'' full-screen with the sugar session on the XO in a window

Re: [Sugar-devel] Running an activity through ssh

2012-04-13 Thread Sascha Silbe
Excerpts from Manuel Kaufmann's message of 2012-04-13 18:07:51 +0200:

I'm trying to run an Activity over ssh -C -X to my XO.
[...]
Is there a way to do this?

Sugar and the Gnome platform it builds on generally assume there's a
single, local, graphical session. In particular, the D-Bus session bus
is used for IPC (e.g. data store access, Collaboration, even some
interactions between Activities and the Shell).

If you're feeling adventurous, you can try using the D-Bus session bus
of the Sugar session, but still running the Activity a) outside the
Sugar session (POSIX session id, some environment variables etc. are
different) and b) on a different display (the one forwarded by ssh). I'm
using the method below to access the data store remotely, but never
tried anything more advanced (like running an Activity).

Put the following inside your X session script:

{{{
echo DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
~/.sugar/dbus-session-bus-address.sh
}}}

The X session script is ~/.xsession on most distros, but OLPC OS uses a
custom display manager called olpc-dm and IIRC there was something
peculiar about the way it treated ~/.xsession, which may (or may not)
prevent the above from working as expected. You may have better luck
sticking it into ~/.sugar/debug. That file isn't meant for this kind of
usage, but it currently works.

Then from your SSH session source the file created above and export
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS so applications can connect to the D-Bus
session bus:

{{{
. ~/.sugar/dbus-session-bus-address.sh
export DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS
}}}

I used to have a ~/.ssh/rc that read
~/.sugar/dbus-session-bus-address.sh so I'd always use the D-Bus session
bus of the Sugar session. Unfortunately, for some reason, this broke
some time ago: environment variables set in ~/.ssh/rc don't get
propagated to the user shell anymore. But if you really wanted to
automate it, you could update ~/.ssh/environment from within ~/.xsession
or ~/.sugar/debug.

[Sugar-devel] [SWEETS] Collaboration through ad-hoc

2012-04-13 Thread Esteban Bordón
Hi,

I'm testing collaboration between a laptop XO 1.75 with F14-Sugar 0.94 and
a Classmate PC with Sweets Distribution (using Factory repo) on Ubuntu
10.04. The steps done are:

* XO starts Chat Activity and share
* classmate's neighborhood show the chat icon shared
* When open the shared activity, I don't see any message sent by the XO

If Classmate share the activity, this isn't shown in XO's neighborhood

I attach logs of the first case.

cheers,
Esteban.

[Sugar-devel] Sugar Digest 2012-04-12

2012-04-13 Thread Walter Bender
== Sugar Digest ==

1. Over last weekend, OLPC hosted a documentation sprint at their
Cambridge office. It was great to meet a number of new-to-me faces,
including Craig Perue and Mark Battley, with whom I enjoyed a great
conversation about how we can make Sugar (and Sugar documentation)
more useful. As a result, we are trending more towards documenting not
just what and how, but also why and how. Many thanks to Adam Holt for
organizing the event and also to everyone who participated -- those
who came from long distances, such as Nancie Severs, Bill Stelzer,
Sameer Verma, Christoph Derndorfer, Laura de Reynal, and Ed Cherlin,
as well as those who participated remotely, such as Caryl Bigenho. The
results can be seen in refreshed wiki pages and a new Help activity.

2. Claudia Urrea and I spend the first half of the week in Managua
with Felix Garrido and the deployment team at Fundación Zamora Terán.
The overall purpose of the visit was to discuss strategies for
evaluation in light of the foundation's recent expansion of its laptop
program to the Island of Ometepe. I spent some time acquainting the
learning team with the latest feature of the Portfolio tool and some
enhancements to Sugar that will make learning visible not just to
administrators, but also to the learners themselves. While we were
there, also I had a chance to catch up with Daniel Drake and consume
some taco soup.

During the conversation with the learning team, the topic of nutrition
came up. FZT is working with USAID on a nutrition curriculum. We
discussed ways to integrate the curriculum into Sugar, by or example,
using the Turtle Art [1]. I was inspired by our discussion of the Food
Pyramid, so on the flight back to Boston, I wrote a new activity, [2].
What is potentially fun about it is that not only can you explore the
precompiled database of foods, but you can also load your own foods
into the database. So, for example, a child could take a photo (using
Record) or draw a picture (using Paint) of dinner, and then load that
food into the activity.

3. The Scratch team has updated their license documentation such that
it is once again compatible with Sugar's Free Software guidelines.
Please see [3].

4. There continues to be growing interest in localizing Sugar to
indigenous languages. The latest project is with the Nahuatl language.
The work is being done in cooperation with the State Government in San
Luis Potosí through the Secretary of Education, the Universidad
Politécnica de San Luis Potosí (UPSLP), the Instituto de Lenguas
Indígenas. There is also interest in starting a program in the Xi'úi
languaje (Pame).

5. Details for eduJAM! [4] the week of May 7-12 in Montevideo are
available. eduJAM will be followed by a code sprint [5] on the 13th
and 14th.

6. The week following eduJAM! will be a Squeakfest, also in Montevideo
(May 17-19) and May 21-22 in Buenos Aires.

Yeah, thats right...

Would this be a situation where a global emblem could be applied to
 the
Activity icon of globally sourced Activities?

You mean having a badge painted on activity icons for activities that
came from the Sugar Network? It might be the way if we decide to have
both kinds activities (local and from Sugar Network) in one list.
Right now, it is not clear for me.

And shouldn't the Home view options be harmonized with the filters we
   have
 in the Journal?
Then one could view all in a list by removing the favorites toggle,
 or
filter the favorites by the menu of filters.

We can, reserver a place for Sugar Network icon in
Home
view and move client there after completing more needed work.

     * F1, global view
     * F2, group view
     * F3, local/personal view

That progress bar will happen anyway. When you launch activity, progress bar
will mean not only downloading but possible installing or possible building
from sources (and the same for all possible dependencies).

Back to the alert after making activity off-line, maybe it is not bad
idea because making activities off-line should not be too frequent
operation. And, since making activities off-line will reserve some
storage space, it will be useful to make it as explicit as possible
(with clear text like You age going to take n bytes, the n bytes will
be free after operation). Storage space is an especial problem on XOs.

To be honest, telepathy-salut (i.e., not jabbeer connection) was not
properly tested in Factory (and I found some issues, after brief try,
as well). Will look to the code asap and reply to the mailing list.

Some notes for further testing, would be useful to have the same

Unfortunately, ARM (XO-1.75) is not yet supported in Sweets
Distribution. It is not a priority [for SD starting up period] because
the first XO based deployment (in Peru) will happen for x86
(XO-1, XO-1.5). Any help from people who [want to] knows how
Open Build System [1] works and how to attach ARM distros there,
