I agree, this is as an important issue to solve. What about having a button
going to the Journal detail view of the entry? This is the logical place to
 make such additions.

Or how do you like the idea to have an option in the activity toolbar for
the description [1]? And adding later one for the tags, too?

I think this is more than adequate. I would have it be additive rather
than editing the entire description on the toolbar.

Good point, yeah we can see how we represent that best (maybe someone
can generate a mockup).

I remember someone had worries about screen size, especially for
old-style activities that has only one tab (since we add another
button). We have to check for that. For new-style activities it works
fine as we have the activity toolbar.

[Sugar-devel] Automatically Retrying an AP?

2010-02-04 Thread Martin Langhoff
Hi list!

We have a bug on 802/8.2.1 where in some cases (specific combination
of WPA2 with certain AP chipsets) we fail to associate on the very
first attempt, and then subsequent attempts succeed.

I am wondering if a workaround is possible here -- to patch the
Sugar/Neighbourhood view code that drives NM so that for certain cases
it automatically retries once before giving up.

Is it possible? Where should I look?

More about the bug: Under the right conditions, this repros 100%: it
always fails the first attempt, always succeeds the second time.
Anyone interested in the root cause should get into
http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/9936 -- and be prepared to get into the
firmware/supplicant/kernel interactions. The bug seems to be fixed on
F11 images.

cheers,

[Sugar-devel] [Feature] Write to Journal anytime

2010-02-04 Thread John Tierney

Hello All,

I am working with University Professors who are part of the Computers and
Writing Community
and would like to have them become more involved in making this Feature an
important enhancement
to Sugar. With their expertise and pedagogical guidance, help Sugar Labs create
a space where
students and teachers can access resources to help them with the Writing
Process and Command
of Language Skills.

With the help of Tammy Conrad-Salvo Associate Director Writing Lab Purdue there
will be a 9am-12pm
Sugar Workshop on May 22nd at 2010 Computer and Writing Conference being held
at Purdue University.
http://www.digitalparlor.org/cw2010/.

Tammy has also been involved with myself, Gerald Ardito and Walter
brainstorming the concept of OWL jr. for
Sugar and the XO Laptop. The idea is to have writing resources available to
K-12 students which would be able
to run in an online or offline scenario. it would be great to find a way
through the New Feature Write to the Journal
Anytime that these resources would be available.

Purdue Online Writing Lab(OWL)
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

What is your thoughts on the best process to bring these Professors into the
Community.

Should they sign up for multiple lists? This is now on the Developer list but
when
the discussion of Feature moves to Pedagogical portions would the thread also
include
It's An Education Project List?

If they want to begin commenting immediately on thread, do they have to be
signed into mailing list for comments/email to be accepted?

To edit and make comments on Sugar Labs wiki I know they must have an account
with Sugar Labs. Is there a link in the Wiki that walks this process through
Step by Step.

Since I have been signed up to the lists for quite sometime I thought I should
know this but

found myself unable to answer the question having not looked at it from this
point of view. I found

myself going to multiple places in the wiki finding myself unable to present a
clear strategy to Tammy

so she could pass along to her other colleagues. There is a very good chance I
have overlooked the

information.

Any guidance would be helpful.

Thank You!

John Tierney

 Hi,

in the design meting of the 16th of January [1] there was an agreement
to move forward on the 'Write to Journal anytime' [2] Feature like the
 following:

Instead of displaying the naming alert when you close an activity for
the first time we will switch to the Journal detail few of the activity.
The back button on the detail page will bring you, like in general
Journal use, to the main Journal page. The NamingAlert will go away.

The advantage of this solution is addition of context, as the user will
be brought to the obvious place where he can make his notes. The
fullscreen window switch might be confusing, though. At least this
Feature should be tested and we should do a bit more thinking before
 making those changes.

As the naming alert did bring confusion, too, we would like to remove it
in 0.88. And aim for a better solution in 0.90. If we do not find
agreement on this we could add a gconf option for that alert, too.

As part of the issue is: That the Journal is not as accessible as it
should be, we could make the Journal more prominent in the Home View.
We could add the Journal to the activity ring (at the top) in the Home
view, colored to make it accessible in the home view all the time (like
described in the 'Resume vs Start New' Feature.

 Thanks,
 Simon

Re: [Sugar-devel] [DESIGN] Control Panel Font configuration

2010-02-04 Thread Art Hunkins
I very much hope that whatever UI design is settled on for the font
configuration control panel that:

1) whatever needs to be clicked on will be large enough both for younger
children and senior citizens;

2) the solution will include both an easy *and obvious* 1 up and 1 down
option. In this regard I completely agree with Daniel, as this will likely be
the most frequently desired usage. Dragging a slider to increment/decrement by
1 is unnecessarily cumbersome and tricky. Perhaps having two designated boxes
to click, in addition to the slider, would be the best idea.

[Sugar-devel] Newbie: I want to synchronize my translations with the next Sugar release.

2010-02-04 Thread uwieske
Hi Folks

I am starting as of February 8th 2010 translations for the Papiamento
language together with my translationteam members.
Can someone tell me when our translated work should be committed for the
next release of Sugar?

Which release is that, by the way?
Also can someone point me to the proper webpage where I can find release
schedule information?

Thank you
Urso

Can you be a bit more specific, please? The following options come to my
mind:
a) libxklavier-dev isn't installed because you forgot to install
everything depscheck complained about
b) libxklavier-dev isn't installed because depscheck didn't complain
about it (please post output of lsb_release -irs)

c) libxklavier-dev is installed, but python-xklavier doesn't like it.

Re: [Sugar-devel] SoaS with Sugar 0.87.2 coming to a system near you

This version lacks csound-python. (A simple install adds it back in.)

I'd appreciate csound-python being included - both now and forever.

 Hi everybody,

by popular request, there's now a Sugar on a Stick snapshot with the
latest Sugar development release available. Please note that this
snapshot is already part of our way to Sugar on a Stick v3.

It's still based on F12 for stability reasons, though (this will change
in the development cycle). But it incorporates already a number of
significant changes which are part of the change to the SoaS v3 builds.

 The build is available here:

 http://download.sugarlabs.org/soas/snapshots/3/soas-3-20091228.iso

Please follow the Blueberry instructions to put it on your flash drive.

You can even run it on your XO-1 from a flash drive (NAND installation
possibilities are being evaluated) by using liveusb-creator.

Afterwards, plug it into your XO-1 and type: boot u:\boot\olpc.fth

However, a known issue is (on the XO-1 only) that the X session tends to
crash when trying to scroll. Help with debugging this would be very
 welcome.

 Thanks and happy testing!

Me bad. I just forgot that jhbuild doesn't automatically check for
dependencies on every run... as opposed to the configure script.

Tomorrow I'll try uninstalling libxklavier-dev and run depscheck to
ensure it properly complains. It almost certainly will.

BTW, we've also got hit by the missing --enable-maintainer-mode in one
of the sugar modules, for which I had posted a patch some time ago. I'll
search for the bug in trac and ping it.

I just tried running this in VMworksation: both with 256 and 1024 memory:

zyx-liveinstaller crashes on startup . Is this a known bug?
