Lionel,

Family tree construction is a fairly common project in some school
settings (along with other family history projects, e.g. interview
your grandparents about what life was like when they were your age,
etc.) so I think that this is a wonderful idea for a Sugar Activity.
I may take a shot at entering my own family geneology (which has been
traced back to the mid-1600's on my mother's side.) as a test case :-)

One small note about the upload to ASLO, I think something was not
configured correctly. The link you give shows what appears to be an
activity named 1 (the version number) although it is clearly your
actitvity but the name Roots does not appear in the activity name
field and it is not searchable. Perhaps an ASLO admin can correct
this so that your activity is properly discoverable on ASLO

As you seek to refine Roots in later versions, I would very much
appreciate it if you would consider working on internationalization
(i18n) with gettext so that we can host the PO file in Pootle with
other 'Honey activities for localization (L10n) into some of the
130-or-so languages that we host..

Warmest Regards,

In this first release, a description (for example coming from Write

be link to each node. You could move and zoom the main view or center it on
 a specific node.

The genealogical tree with all included contents is save to the journal.

The activity starts with an empty tree but some multi-nodes samples are
provided. One sample is the genealogical tree of the Napoleon's family to
show usage of this activity as an Historical tool.

Activity is compatible with all Sugar version (0.82-0.96). Source code is

Al ser menos de 40.000 articulos, podemos hacer una version con todos ellos

Hi James,

Funny project !

Many wives is not a problem but brothers marrying with sisters (b) is
not supported thought I saw it too on Egyptian Pharaon dynasty.

BTW, for representation reason my current graphical algorithm has some
limitations. The most important is that it could represent only parents with
“blood relationship” (ascendant or descendant) from the root person (the one
with the large border). To be honest, during the development, I was very
surprised by the complexity of drawing a family tree :-)

Accidents happen. Software should not set policy. Stick to a model
based on evidence rather than a model based on assumed reality.

Also, imagine the software being used for breeding of animals, where
that kind of pairing is an occasionally acceptable method of husbandry.

The genealogical software environment is extensive; you might want to
look at a standard format export such as GEDCOM. Which sticks to an
assumed reality position. Heh.

I know more about this than I would like ... my father is a genealogist

 Hi all,

I’m proud to announce the release of the beta version of my first Sugar
 activity : “Roots”.

Roots it’s a the genealogical activity for Sugar.

     http://activities.sugarlabs.org/en-US/sugar/addon/4521

In this first release, a description (for example coming from Write
activity) and an image (pasted from Record, Browse or Draw activity) could
be link to each node.

This activity is experimental so I’m very interested to have your feedbacks,
 suggestions or… just bugs :-)

Activity is compatible with all Sugar version (0.82-0.96). Source code is
 available on http://git.sugarlabs.org/roots

 Best regards from France.

     Lionel.

Will take it for a spin. I've used GRAMPS (http://gramps-project.org/)
under GNOME previously. My family database has over 300 records. Very
useful tool.

cheers,

Re: [Sugar-devel] New genealogic activity for Sugar

2011-12-29 Thread Gonzalo Odiard
With my Activities Team hat in my head, I want do few suggestions:

* Try to use the new toolbars. If you want maintain compatibility with old
sugar, will need implement the two toolbars (old and new),
but with simple activities is not too difficult. We are trying implement
new toolbars in old the activities, and will do easier
migrate to new Sugar versions. Generally, we put all the buttons in the
toolbar. If you need help with icons can request to the Design team
in this list.

* You can request inclusion of the activity in the pootle server and enable
translators to do their job.

* If you can implement saving and reading a standard format as GEDCOM, the
possibilities are increased because
you enable the high ceil. If the kids want continue and need a more
powerful application, can use their work,
and also can interchange with other sources.

Thanks for your work, I am sure this activity will be used a lot.

Gonzalo

2011-12-29 Thread Hal Murray

Many wives is not a problem but brothers marrying with sisters (b)
is not supported thought I saw it too on Egyptian Pharaon dynasty.

Accidents happen. Software should not set policy. Stick to a model based
on evidence rather than a model based on assumed reality.

Don't overlook same-sex parents.

The world is changing. I think it's for the better.

That case could be a wonderful opportunity for education or a nasty way to
offend the locals.
