I am not sure though, which should come first. Generally speaking, sugar-devel@ might be treated as a pure technical channel and posting in non-en can considered in the same way as adding comments to the source code (the most common practices is that people must not comment/name-variables in non-en). But I guess sugar-devel@ is not such thing (maybe original list on @laptop.org was, but current sugar-devel@ is not). And I agree that having one common resource (for more technical discussions than on ieap@) is more important than keeping it clear from non-main-lang posts. In any case, having suggested main language should be pretty enough (if people can post in main language, they do). Besides, I'm sure that creating more rules for humans is less useful way than let technology do underneath work to avoid having human rules, except most natural ones that don't need any explicit publishing. In other words, if there are no many non-en posts, it is np for writers/readers to use aside translation tools. Otherwise, it is the right moment to start thinking how technology can solve this issue, e.g., patch ML software to auto add translation link to any non-main-lang posts, or, [at the en] add Web UI for ML (e.g., google groups have a checkbox to translate posts to your language). -- Aleksey ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel
[Sugar-devel] First impressions of a new XO user
Hello, a coworker got an old XO-1 and asked me to refurbish it for his kids. So I asked him to test OLPC-OS 12.1.0 build 11 and report any problems he ran into. New users can offer a fresh perspective on things that we give for granted. Some of the items below could be turned into trac tickets or wishlist items (provide a way to kill activities, provide a way to wipe the user profile, make more activities work in tablet mode...). If you need more information from the reporter, feel free to contact him directly at diegol...@google.com. Forwarded Message From: Diego Puppin To: Bernie Innocenti Subject: primo bug report Date: Wed, 23 May 2012 15:24:02 -0400 My older kid (7yr) and I had a lot of fun last with the OLPC. We played maze, we took pictures and more. The younger kid (15mo) seemed confused by the lack of a touch screen :-) - I can't find a way to connect to a network with hidden SSID. I tried to add my network using Gnome, but I couldn't find a "Connect" button there. Back to Sugar, the hidden network is still hidden. - The audio/video system seems unreliable. "Record" takes a long time to start. When I try to record (audio or video) the success rate is around 30% - the activity gets stuck. I can leave the activity but it keeps running in the background (green leds for camera and mike still on). How can I kill the activity entirely? - I found a recording in the Journal, but the Play activity failed with something as "resource busy". - While playing maze, with some gesture I changed the borders from the activity-specific border/menus to a different view. The only way out was the "square" button on top right. What's the gesture in and out of the activity-specific border/menus? - Only maze and collapse seem to work in game mode (rotated screen, use of the joypad). The other activities all requires a mouse. That's too bad. - Is there a way to upload an Epub and use the computer as an e-reader? Is there a mode where the backlight is off (I heard rumors like that)? - Reliability seems an issue. For a reason or another, I ended up rebooting every few minutes when I was switching among apps. When I stuck to play maze, everything was smooth and my kid did a million runs through the labyrinth. Just out of curiosity, did you install a beta build, or is it supposed to be stable? I don't mind "dogfooding", but I would be worried if this is the build going out to the public. - Is there a way to wipe it and restore to factory? You mentioned something like that. I don't mind if people post in other languages, but I wouldn't know what they are, and I wouldn't read them. There's too much technical detail to trust to translation by machine. I didn't make it autorun in case if you will use it in the same way as Journal (and Sugar Network database), i.e., keep database in ~/.sugar/ and start daemon from current user's session. To attach new repo, either do it manualy (from http://download.sugarlabs.org/packages/SweetsDistribution:/Factory/) or follow SD's regular way (http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sweets_Distribution). btw, it might be useful to create SemanticXO package as well and make it pluggable like it was done with Sugar Network (checkbox in "Sweets Distribution" Control Panel component). i.e., it should regular DBus service that provides the same Dbus API as sugar-datastore. If you will do that, I think it will be possible to plug either sugar-datastore or SemanticXO in runtime. -- Aleksey ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel

Re: [Sugar-devel] Wanting to know a bit of (NetworkManager) workflow upon resume-from-suspend
Hi all. Here is the latest update. We got the following two patches tested by Ceibal :: a) 0001-TEST-See-if-this-works-for-the-mesh-issue-on-signed-.patch This patch, adds "/etc/modprobe.d/libertas.conf" to the initramfs image (unarchiving, adding and archiving during OOB stage). Unfortunately, this does not seem to work. We could debug it more, but I fear that that would inevitably mean modifying the initramfs a fair bit. Since, we are talking at the kernel level, modifying initramfs even a bit too much, would require exponential more testing. Lucking, we have a simple, clean, understood and guaranteed-to-work solution. b) 0001-olpc-configure-Reloading-libertas-and-dependent-usb8.patch (As already stated in earlier mails) This patch reloads the libertas (and the dependent usb8xxx driver) during intial boot, which mounts the secondary-storage-based-filesystem. This time, the rules from /etc/modprobe.d/* are read, and the mesh is appropriately disabled via the "libertas_disablemesh" KLM parameter. So, it would be good if this is included upstream. For brevity, I am re-attaching the two patches. Thanks and Regards, Ajay 0001-TEST-See-if-this-works-for-the-mesh-issue-on-signed-.patch Description: Binary data 0001-olpc-configure-Reloading-libertas-and-dependent-usb8.patch Description: Binary data ___ Sugar-devel mailing list Sugar-devel@lists.sugarlabs.org http://lists.sugarlabs.org/listinfo/sugar-devel
