[Sugar-devel] New activity proposal

2020-03-30 Thread Abhishek Tanwar
Hello everyone,

How would it be to develop an activity for both sugar and sugarizer which
can help the students to learn different mathematical tricks to improve
their calculation speed?

For example:
Let us find (x5)²
Step 1: Think of the number next to x.
Step 2: x * number next to x
Step 3: Put 25 at the end of the answer.
Answer = Step 2 (concat) 25

Find (45)² =?
Step 1: 45 * 45 = ...25
Step 2: 4*(4+1) = 4*5 = 20 [here number next to 4 is 5(not adjacent but
after 4)]

Hence the answer will be 2025

I would appreciate your feedback.
Thank you

It is done by some ugly queue management, timeouts, and events. The

Yeah, I think I agree with you. There is a possibility of segmentation of
the community.

As far as mail is concerned, the replies do get grouped with the original
mail (like this one perhaps), so I think it is fine.

Just got to get used to it. :)

Re: [Sugar-devel] Studying Online - The Conversation

2020-03-30 Thread James Cameron
Thanks Anindya,

We have debated real-time chat quite a bit.

At minimum we offer IRC, Internet Relay Chat. However, unlike what
you may be used to it does not provide persistence or history unless
you set up a relay or server instance. Channel #sugar on network
freenode.

Also, we tend not to have enough people interested in keeping IRC
alive with discussion.

Mail is best, and can be near real-time.

We also have a meeting logging robot on the #sugar-meeting channel.

Mentors may offer alternatives for specific projects, but if that
happens further segmentation of community will occur.

Hello James,

Similar things have been implemented here in India as well. We too are
having video conference classes on Zoom and other communication on Google
Classroom.

With respect to GSoC, I don't know it there is a norm of chats, but I think
it could really help to have one on one chats between the students and
mentors over mails in certain situations.

Chat gives a more real-time feel and I think it can be useful if there
needs to be a bidirectional conversation. Platforms like Slack and Telegram
can be used.

[Sugar-devel] GSoC 2020 Proposals progress #3

2020-03-30 Thread James Cameron
Thank you to students so far. We have twenty-two (22) proposals on
our dashboard.

We have eight proposals with status "final";

- Port Sugarizer activities to Sugar,

- Sugar App Store For Python 3 Activities,

- Model–View–Controller refactoring for Music Blocks,

- Sugarizer Knowledge Activity Pack (qty 2),

- Sugarizer Game Activity Pack (qty 2),

- Sugarizer School Portal,

We have fourteen proposals with status "draft shared";

- Port Sugar and core activities to Python 3,

- Improve and Maintain 25 Sugar Activities,

- Resolve 100 issues in Music Blocks (qty 3),

- Music Blocks JavaScript Export,

- New Science themed Activities,

- Sugarizer Knowledge Activity Pack (qty 2),

- Sugarizer Game Activity Pack (qty 5),

There are 20 students. By cross-checking the submission e-mail with
our mailing list, seven students have not subscribed.

Many of the proposals have not been shared on our mailing list, which
means there has been no opportunity for contribution by or
collaboration with the rest of the Sugar Labs community. Remember
that the dashboard is only accessible to mentors.

Some of the proposals are from students who have not made any
contributions on GitHub to any of our projects, or have made only a
brief trivial contribution. They have not demonstrated capability and
may not have appreciated the culture of an open source community.

Not sure if you are doing the optional things that we value? Please
read; https://github.com/sugarlabs/GSoC#right-fit
