Increasing the number of mirrors would certainly not hurt us, but I'm
not sure how beneficial it is unless we start pointing users at these
 mirrors.

The most rudimentary way would be doing round-robin DNS on
download.sugarlabs.org. The next step would be delegating
download.sugarlabs.org to smart nameservers with GeoIP and dynamic
mirror add/removal based on monitoring. But wouldn't this be a
duplication of what services like Cacheboy and Mirrorbrain already do?

I don't see roundrobin as a solution. (details below)

CacheBoy would be the solution if:
- one or more for could join cacheboy
- if/when cacheboy is open source

Since the mirror do have delta's in the path Mirrorbrain would the
current solution.

We also have a namespace problem to address: last year, Marco convinced
me to shorten the URL by scrapping the /sugar prefix. This means that
mirrors would now have to configure a virtual host for
download.sugarlabs.org. We could fix this by re-introducing /sugar and
adding temporary compatibility aliases to the main server, but it
wouldn't work for the mirrors. What do you think?

It would not solve it.

http://download.sugarlabs.org/soas/snapshots/3/SoaS3-200908182110.iso

http://download2.sugarlabs.org/soas/snapshots/3/SoaS3-200908182110.iso

http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/software/sugarlabs/soas/snapshots/3/SoaS3-200908182110.iso

http://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/Sugar/soas/snapshots/3/SoaS3-200908182110.iso

http://sugarlabs.cdn.cacheboy.net/soas/snapshots/3/SoaS3-200908182110.iso

so 3 out of 5 match, it does not look very promising when grow to more
mirrors. Thats why I like the CacheBoy solution.

Marten

Hi Marilyn,

What would your feature list be on a small (linux driven) laptop
in addition to mine?

- audiofeedback (hear what you type (per word basis))
- adapted lessons (multilanguage) for tipptrainer
http://freshmeat.net/projects/pingos_tipptrainer/
- may something thats enlarges the cursor area

and obviously:
- spelling checker (fix/highlight while typing)
- large font buttons

[Sugar-devel] 2 idea's to train people dyslexia

2009-09-16 Thread Marten Vijn
Hi,

I am not a dyslexia expert, maybe a bit more that average.

idea 1
Today I read in a newspaper that it helps people
to let them hear what they (words not the characters).

People made commerial software for and improved really
the performance of kids.

idea 2
typetrainers (learning to type with 10 fingers)
tend to teach character by character .
Teaching by words would be way better since people
use the word image (not the character by character scanning)

idea 3
I combination of 1 and 2 maybe creates new use cases
in developed countrys like mine.

A remix of speak (like a always on button) would do a major job I think

Well, for this task (shipping an updated or new distro for the XO)
there's little need for programming skills, it's mostly a matter of
having someone who leads the effort and recruits people to help with
the various tasks, give publicity to the effort, keep track of the
open issues in the different bug trackers involved, help with
 packaging, do integration testing, etc.

oke, from a side of a none developer, I would be good, a list of tasks
to:
- to do meself
- point people to

For me is hard to so see what is needed and to move to the right
direction. Knowing a bit from linux it is best to avoid dist-wars.

I 'll check the wiki and look/create for a task list. IHMO tasks shoud
be:
- do-able (beginning / end / clear steps)
- supported by a person
- avoiding flames/wars whatever negative energie
- complexicity index.

Am I correct (by kind of consensus) that a tasklist would help?

That's why people are barking at the wrong tree when they say that
Sugar developers should port Sugar to whatever system. The skills
involved are very different from upstream work and if coders are not
coding we won't have anything new to ship.

If barking ever applies me to please let me know. My intention is to
have usable contributions to our project.

2. my public_key is in User:Marten
3. I am on Activity Team/Contacts (I was not sure to me add meself)
4. For the people that don't know me yet

Hi I am Marten, I live in Leiden, The Netherland. I have a girlfiend,
two kids (2,5 and 4,7 years). I was a physiotherapist and occupational
therapist before became a unix and net sysadmin. I run a XO-repaering
service and organize a camp. I may have noticed my English brake every
comple of lines. I have dyslexia, pls try to read want I mean. (In a way
you lucky my Dutch is worse.)

pls read more http://martenvijn.nl

http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Activity_Team/TODO

From here as a non-developer I seem to really get lost.
To not scare non-tech people I would:
- move Community Task more up
- create 5 simple tasks than can do done repetitive:
 - download,burn,boot,give feedback
 - hardware reports
 - documentation for BIOS in cd-rom and usbdrive
 - reviewing Activities
 - writing instruction-sets/PR-materials ?
 - Roadmaps for LocalSugarLabs (creating UserBase)

Can I shuffle a bit on the TODO list to make more easy for new coming
people?

cheers,
Marten

2009-05-20 Thread Marten Vijn
Dear All,

Inspired by Lionel, I would like to make place for OLPC/Sugar on
OpenCommunityCamp.

The Camp will be from July 26th till 2nd August in the Netherlands (20
from Schiphol Airport AMS)

We can have 6 day's of work and fun together.

Since I am in facilitating in core organization, responsible for the
evening program and other track and doing parts of the content
(*BSD/XO-repairing).

To have this working out I need the help of one or two people who can
take a lead in the program.

So get this working please let me know whether this is interesting. A no
fine too and save me time. Ofcourse I do prefer a yes of some people.

The current evening track has interesting talks already.

During tree day's there is also a Drupal training.

More info:
http://opencommunitycamp.org

evening track:

Thanks,
Marten

[Sugar-devel] soas2

2009-04-07 Thread Marten Vijn

hi,

When i make drives with:

Soas2-200904031934.iso
Soas2-200903131725.iso

Under ubunutu with livecd-iso-to-disk.sh

I get grub loading and end in een grey screen. Here the boot halts.

Reproducable with:
- qemu
- alix1c board
- EEE 701

Fidling a bit show a grub display, with crambled characters and a
warning password required.

This is probably the grub passwd.

Kind regards,
Martrn
