Re: [Sugar-devel] Unable to use shared clipboard in sugar live vm.

Hey Shivam,

Your question is about VirtualBox and Linux in general, not Sugar.

Was reading through the email list, and saw this. James is indeed correct,
it seems more about VB and Linux with clipboard sharing being definitely a
problem some folks face when working with VB. It didn't work the last time
I tried it with VB + Ubuntu Server. I instead jumped on to having Shared
folders between my host and virtual system using VB's shared folders guest
additions approach. Not sure how much this helps you, but I documented how
it worked out for me. Here you go,

https://mixstersite.wordpress.com/2020/05/14/solved-virtualbox-shared-folders-guest-additions-not-working-linux/

It's a bit raw, I scribbled the blog out when I was able to solve the
problem but hope it helps.

[Sugar-devel] [Reminder #2] Sugar Labs Oversight Board Elections 2019-21

2020-01-22 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello folks,
Just checking in again with a polite reminder for folks who are yet to vote
in the ongoing Sugar Labs Oversight Board (SLOB) 2019-2021 elections. The
election closes on 31st January 2020. You can find more information on the
candidates here
https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Oversight_Board/2019-2021-candidates

If you are a member of Sugar Labs, you must have received a unique link to
vote from CIVS or c...@cs.cornell.edu with the options to poll for the
candidates. If you know of someone who didn't get the email and is a member
of Sugar Labs. Please do let us know, I would be happy to help you out.

Looking forward to all your hearty participation in the ongoing election.
Thanks,

Best,

Re: [Sugar-devel] [IAEP] [SLOBS] Oversight Board Elections 2019-21 has begun!

2020-01-15 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello folks,
Good to see everyone can vote and the election is going fine. We did have
technical difficulty at the start but I am working on resolving that.
We did have a number of email addresses of the members bounce as their
alias didn't exist (About 30+). I would request if you do know of any past
or present members of Sugar Labs and didn't receive the election link. Then
please do come forward to update your email address, so we can send you
links to the election as well. The voter turnout is at 8% and I think we
can do better!

Thanks Ibiam for covering that bit, if anyone would like to be a member of
Sugar Labs they can apply here -
https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_Labs/Members

James, do you have access to memb...@sugarlabs.org alias? If you do can you
remove the candidates that are up for election? In the meantime, I will add
SLOB to the results. That's a good idea. Thanks,

Best,
Vipul

[Sugar-devel] Important Update on the Slob Elections 2019-2021

2020-01-10 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello everyone,
Over the past couple of days, there have been some important updates
regarding the upcoming SLOB elections. These are as follows,

1. The Sugar Labs oversight board has unanimously agreed to the motion of
changing the name of the election to *2019-21*, the decision is
underlined below.

Agreed Motion 2020-02; this late election to be renamed 2019-2021, and
> that the seats to vacate be either three or four, per our governance
> rule "positions on the board will be on a two-year staggered basis".

You can find the information regarding the election and the candidates
here, https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Oversight_Board/2019-2021-candidates
(We are still migrating information of candidates and will finish that up
soon)

2. In regards to the same, the seats to be vacated has to be either three
or four for the election to take place. There is one (1) additional slot
available after the resignation of Walter Bender from the oversight board.
Walter will still be closely associated with all activities of Sugar Labs.

3. After a discussion with the election committee, I have decided the
election will take place from *15th January to 31st January 2020*. Results
will be declared soon after that.

That would be all for the moment. Hoping to see you all vote for the
upcoming elections! Expecting a bigger turnout. As always, do reach out if
you have any questions.

Re: [Sugar-devel] [SLOBS] Announcing Candidates for the Upcoming SLOB Elections!

2020-01-08 Thread Vipul Gupta
Thanks Ibiam for the clarification!

1. James, I take the blame for the misunderstanding caused due to point 1,
should have cross-checked the facts. I hope this clears it up.

2. I feel the elections should be for 2020-2022 as well, keeping in mind
the fact that we are not cutting anyone's term short by taking this action
and doing right by everyone. This could be a fresh start as well. the
election committee can make sure to have election every year so this
scenario doesn't happen again. Looking forward to other views as well.

3. Looking ahead to see what turns up and proceed accordingly.

We have also finalized the dates of the election. Will announce them once
we finalize this.
Thanks,

Re: [Sugar-devel] Regarding Stand at FOSDEM [1-2 February]

2019-12-17 Thread Vipul Gupta
Thanks Devin, for the vote of confidence. I will get started right on that.
I think planning is needed and as we enter this new decade. It would surely
help out a lot.

Some Updates regarding FOSDEM,
I have forwarded emails containing information about stands received from
FOSDEM to @Alex Perez and @Samson Goddy
as they are both confirmed to go. We also have
tentatively @Peace Ojemeh . I am not sure if I can
make it as I am still looking for a way to reach there. Maybe next year.
Folks for updated information, you can also check this
https://fosdem.org/2020/stands/. Currently, our stand location has been
updated. So, check that out as well. Let me know how I can help more. I
would have forwarded the message from FOSDEM to the list, but its really
long so didn't.

Thanks! Looking forward to helping out!

Re: [Sugar-devel] Regarding Stand at FOSDEM [1-2 February]

2019-12-05 Thread Vipul Gupta
Thanks, James, I went through the logs. I concur with the views put forward
by MrBIOS and Samson. I think conferences help. Not all of them. But, they
do matter. Conferences put Sugar Labs out there in front of the world,
leads to interesting discussions and new collaborations. As Walter also
mentioned,

Music Blocks in Japan is from a conference interaction

I think, this is important and we shoud be more encouraging in doing it. I
am the one who has been proposing and applying to conferences for about
most part this year. I have been informing on the list once the proposal is
accepted or finalised. I understand I should be informing whenever I apply
proactively. I will start doing that. PyCon US was a good initiative. I am
happy that active contributors and board members were there (I couldn't
make it) and represented Sugar Labs. Regarding funding, that I would leave
the SLOB to decide on case by case basis. It would really help out if
people can suggest other conferences as well and move forward in a planned
manner.

Looking forward to helping out in the preperations for FOSDEM!

That's awesome. Looking forward to catching up if I can make it.
Still figuring out a feasible way to reach FOSDEM. I have been consistently
missing out on events.
Let me know if you can help out with the stands.

[Sugar-devel] Fwd: Regarding Stand at FOSDEM [1-2 February]

2019-12-02 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello folks,
Loving the energy of Google Code-In!
FOSDEM [0] is one of the biggest conferences for open-source software
developers with over 600+ lectures, 80+ projects and thousands of people
that participate in it. It's taking place in Brussels / 1 & 2 February
2020. There are many projects, organizations, and companies that are a part
of it every year. I am very happy to announce that *Sugar Labs* has been
selected for the *Stands event* at FOSDEM [1]
<https://fosdem.org/2020/news/2019-11-19-accepted-stands/> Very much like,
what we had at PyCon US but larger. FOSDEM is one of the few conferences
that I think will be a great opportunity for us to be representing Sugar
Labs on a global platform with some of the biggest FOSS projects on
display.

Let me know what you all think, and yeah! let's do work towards making it a
big success!

[Sugar-devel] PyCon Singapore Education Summit 2019

2019-06-20 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello folks,

PyCon Singapore reached out recently for my proposal to host a remote talk
about Sugar Labs at their Education Summit. I think it would be a great new
initiative to talk about Sugar Labs and how we are working towards
reforming the education scenario. The Education Summit will be taking place
at Google on Tuesday 25 June 2019. It would be a gathering of educators
focused on bringing computational thinking and coding literacy, through
Python, to the classroom and the community. We invite passionate educators
to join the discussion, share insights, learn things and build networks!

Which I think is perfect! To improve our impact over the APAC region as
well as spreading awareness and more contributors joining. As PyCon and my
fate have it, I would probably not be able to be in a network zone as I am
out for vacation. Hence, I would love if someone would like to join in for
the talk. I was thinking of some new faces, who haven't got the chance can
come up and so that we can work together on this. Any suggestions would be
deeply appreciated. Thanks,

Re: [Sugar-devel] Sugar Outreach Plans 2019 - PyCon Cleveland

2019-04-20 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hey Tony,

All Things Open is an awesome conf (i just discovered it today, Thanks),
I liked several of the points you made regarding the representation of
Sugar Labs at conferences such as PyCon's. That's exactly what I was hoping
for while focusing on the Education Summit of PyCon Cleveland. These
conferences are a great opportunity to represent the work Sugar Labs have
done, and attract new supporters and contributors. I hope Samson, Ibiam and
everyone else heading out there takes full benefit of the unlimited
potential that PyCon has to offer.

Also, please do collaborate or discuss on the mailing list any conference
or summit that would help further our cause and outreach goals. I would be
more than happy to help draft proposals or even try to get a booth in Open
Spaces so as to represent Sugar Labs and all its offerings to a wider
audience especially educators and students. I am already in the process to
create a google form on seeking speakers in our community who would like to
help out with this and be present at future conferences for Sugar Labs. I
think some good would surely come out this if we all work together.

[Sugar-devel] Sugar Outreach Plans 2019 - PyCon Cleveland

2019-04-12 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello folks,
At the end of 2018, we started the Outreach works for Sugar Labs. At first,
we thought of sharing several accomplishments throughout Google Code-In to
keep the people in the loop on various social media platforms, as well as
sharing experiences of Google Summer of Code students and their projects
held in 2018 for a positive impact.

We thought we can go bigger and with that thought in mind represent Sugar
Labs on larger platforms in front of communities. I proposed PyCon to be a
great choice for the same. Considering OLPC represented XO laptops being
part of PyCon 2008 (An article by Tony
<http://www.olpcnews.com/use_cases/technology/pycon_2008_and_olpc.html>)
Hence, we submitted a proposal for talks about Sugar Labs in the Education
Summit of PyCon Cleveland 2019, and I am very happy to inform that we have
in fact been selected. It's a great accomplishment for us all.

Samson would be representing our community at PyCon Cleveland. I,
unfortunately, due to my university exams won't be able to go. As much as I
loved drafting the proposal with Samson and be would like to meet and talk
about Sugar Labs, I am happy that Samson has a chance to be at PyCon and
will do great. We are still raw in your efforts and have lots to improve.
Would love to have more suggestions on things we should be doing, and also
planning to hold workshops regarding Sugar in many countries in the near
future.

The GSoC GitHub page could keep good track of proposal links. Each

Re: [Sugar-devel] Suggestion on moving from IRC to Gitter

2019-01-18 Thread Vipul Gupta
I do agree with Rahul over the change on communication mediums. This
discussion rose a bit at the start of GSoC 2018 as well, with many fellow
contributors who wanted to apply to Sugar Labs didn't because they could
get a response. And yes, its absolutely okay for a time to have no people
in the room to help. But with Gitter's ability to hold conversations, have
plugins for GitHub and make rooms. We should definitely give it a shot to
see how it pays off in the long run.

The learning curve with IRC does instill a thing of learning or two among
all of us. I for one asked my questions on IRC after thoroughly searching
the web and all the resources I have. Since I always knew the importance
of "Software is free. Time is not." Things taking time to figure out, is
good. But not when its spent on communication mediums by prospective
contributors. They just want to start contributing. And fast. I think
Gitter can help here.

+1 to that, I just traveled to and fro Boston for HackMIT 2018 and tired
doing that. But found the tickets to be much expensive then regular round
trips. Turns out organizers of HackMIT even refused to compensate people
who used such ways and claimed more money.

[Sugar-devel] Deployment of ASLOv3

2018-09-01 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello folks,

Jatin and I had a discussion on finishing up the long-awaited, constantly
developing and quite an important issue. That is the deployment of ASLOv3.
The source code has already been written and present [1] by Jatin in GSoC
2017, there were little problems that were holding back its deployment that
I took charge of solving most of them in GSoC 2018. We came to the
conclusion of working as we go along to get the activities online on the
new server.

We would like the community to put forward their views on the same. Also,
guide us on how to go on about it. Looking forward to getting this done as
quickly as we can. The mentors of our projects can put forward their
helpful insights as they know about the project(s) better.

Re: [Sugar-devel] PyDelhi Dev-sprint - Sugar Labs is participating

2018-05-24 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hi everyone,
Due to certain personal unforeseen factors arising and unable to find
anyone to mentor the Dev-Sprint that was going to take place at PyDelhi
Meetup on the 26th of May. Henceforth, Sugar Labs wouldn't be able to
participate in the dev sprints. I am very sad and disappointed that it has
come to this. I will make sure, it does participate in the next one surely.

Thank you all for your efforts and support !!

[Sugar-devel] PyDelhi Dev-sprint - Sugar Labs is participating

2018-05-22 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hello folks,

I am a co-organizer for a local Python user group, PyDelhi [1]. It's a
volunteer-run organization that hosts free bi-weekly meetups related to
Python in New Delhi, India. I contribute to many of their projects and also
to PyCon India 2018.

So, PyDelhi is organizing a Dev Sprint on 26th May 2018. For the Dev
Sprints, 5 organizations and mentors will be helping out participants
contribute to Open Source Projects. Participating organizations are
Mozilla, Kivy, Python, PyCon India and *Sugar Labs*. All information about
the dev-sprint [2]

Yes, after a brief discussion with many people of the community. Sugar Labs
will also be part of the dev sprints. What help would I need from the
community?
1. *Any* open relatively easy issues that need to be solved. Bugs in
activities. New features. Documentation reviews. That contributor could
solve and get involved in open-source. It could be anything, really. List
them out.
2. *Participation* from people living in New Delhi, you can check the venue
of the sprint here [2]. Please do come, it would be of great help. Even if
you are not that involved.
3. People who could be *available* on the said date remotely, from 10 am to
5pm IST. I wouldn't need any commitments but if some quick feedback on
issues and pull requests could be received. Then it would be a ton of help.

I can't really promise if this would be fruitful or not. But we should
start somewhere. And I think this could be a good start. More people could
start knowing about Sugar Labs and would help later on. As always, all
suggestions are appreciated.

2018-05-12 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hi,
Over the problem, you were having - You need all issues of a every
Repository in Sugar Labs. I would need some clarification on the same.

1. How do you need all the issues (Issue description, just titles, on
respect to what, repo to repo or some other criteria?)
2. Why Javascript, I couldn't understand this part. Shouldn't you need the
output in a more accessible format like JSON for instance? You can use the
GitHub API for the same (I strongly recommend PyGitHub)

Re: [Sugar-devel] Live event of Turtle Blocks organised in India

2018-04-30 Thread Vipul Gupta
Good Work Jaskirat, Keep it up. Will work towards having something similar,
at my college.
We do have an event in which GSoC mentors speak and present their views on
Google Summer of Code and other programs. How to get started. Sort of nice
experience sharing session with the students. We can have the same this
year if people can from Sugar Labs come too. Last year, folks from Joomla
came. Ping me if someone is interested.

How about you Walter? Swinging by India, anytime?

[Sugar-devel] My first blog post regarding GSoC 2018

2018-04-25 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hi everyone,

I recently wrote a blog post [1] on GSoC 2018 and wanting to get some
views/feedback on it from everyone. It revolves around a fun start-up guide
for people looking to take the first step into GSoC and my views overall
about the initial process.

All mentors and students are requested to comment or suggest anything you
feel that I have missed or add more to a particular section. Looking
forward to connecting with you all.

Thank you !!

Re: [Sugar-devel] Congratulations to all the Students in Gsoc 2018

2018-04-24 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hi Abdul, Carlos

Thank you for the warm welcome, mentors. I am looking forward to working
with the community and learn and collaborate a lot in the process.

*Abdul: *I do have my own blog setup on WordPress.com [1], I can get it
started there if it is fine. For convenience, I can form a
separate category of GSoC 2018 that would help in keeping a distinction if
that's fine. I have been writing a lot, hence have a lot of good ideas for
the introductory post. Will post the same at the earliest and send a link
to the devel list. Works?

[Sugar-devel] Adding boot logo to Sugar

2018-04-04 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hey everyone,

I have been working on adding a boot logo to Sugar in reference to issue on
Github [1]. I have made a draft of how the Plymouth screen would look like,
and needed some opinions on the same. Please check it out, or reply to this
thread as to what I should add/remove.

Thanks

[Sugar-devel] Regarding GSoC 2018 project "Migration of activity pages to git"

2018-03-29 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hey everyone,

This mail is regarding all GSoC applicants working under the project stated
above and the mentors, reviewers associated with it. The importance for
collective planning and execution of this project idea as grown
exponentially as mentioned by @quozl here [1].

Therefore, I have created a checklist which contains formats for pull
requests and commit messages and other fine details which will help foster
synchronization. I request everybody involved in this project including the
activity team and wiki team to provide suggestions and valuable insight on
the same.

This list is neither official nor has to be followed by anyone. But a small
initiative to help and collaborate with others by my side. I use this list
to help in end-to-end migration of wiki-pages and quality checking in my
project. Hope it helps you too. You can contribute either to Etherpad [2]
or gist.github.com[3]

Happy Contributing !!

[Sugar-devel] Regarding "permission to collaborate" on issues

2018-03-29 Thread Vipul Gupta
Hi everyone,

>From the past few days, I am noticing issues popping up in Sugar Labs
repository on Github about *asking permission to work on issues* as also
mentioned by Walter here [1] I wanted to take the time present my thoughts
over it. First up, submitting a pull request is not a race. This is not a
competition and sometimes it seems like everything in this world is a
competition but I realized that here in Open-Source, here in Sugar Labs
that is not true. It's quite the opposite.

We must realize that pull requests are an easy path to improve the
codebase, contribute to the organization and much more. Not just more green
dots on the profile page. We must think and act like contributors, not like
.. contenders. From the last month, I have been working and contributing to
Sugar Labs, I feel I have grown so much.

Quoting @quozl here

> What matters is the pull request. This new practice of asking for
> permission to work on something, perhaps in the hope of being the one who
> will win the task, goes against our Sugar Labs culture
> <https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_Labs>. If someone else solves the

In all honesty, I asked for the permission to work on an issue myself. But
one should learn from their mistakes and from other's mistakes. Hence I
would request all participants to read [2] at least once before hitting the
"Submit pull request" button the next time and work and collaborate.

Happy Contributing !!

Ps.
- I apologize for the rant, but I think it was my duty to put forward my
opinions and help the community grow in more constructive manner.
- Last night, I received a message from someone requesting me to
collaborate on an issue that I was working on. I was taken aback, hence
from then, I thought about to write this mail and make people more aware.

I agree with all points that Tony put forward and especially where GitHub
either directly or indirectly resulted in the reduction of value of the two
sources mentioned. The world is changing, technology at present will become
obsolete at one point of time. The decision of Sugar Labs to keep with the
times, advance, grow, and get new developers associated by migrating its
documentation of activities is a critical for future opportunities and will
help everyone involved.

Like I mentioned in my proposal too that documentation is one of the most
important steps of any project specially if it is open-source. I know that
because of the experience of actually writing and reading it for years
myself. If for users, the documentation is easy to read, easy to edit and
accessible fast. Then I think that helps everybody. Be it users, members
and even developers looking to contribute.

Thanks for your comments, Tony. Will be sure to add them to my proposal. I
really think my project would be beneficial for the community and all its
users involved.

I had a few hiccups in the migration which I will start improving upon. I
have made a PR on the base repo.
