That's Thunderbird (which I'm using right now), I think. The Evolution
email editor is a wonderful compared to Thunderbird's.

Tinymail seems to be a viable alternative. It claims to have
out-of-the-box support for OLPC: http://tinymail.org/

The technical featureset is impressive. I have no idea about real-life
quality.

Oh, there is even a video of it running on an XO:

Is it just who didn't know about this till now?

The use of the proper sorting algorithm does not change the lousy track

Right. That's why I used to use Evolution. The threading
was wonderful. In many ways, I miss Evolution.

After years of watching bug duplicates pile up for the
mailbox corruption, I had to face the fact that Evolution
just wasn't something I could trust with my email.

Go ahead and clone the UI, mostly. Run from the code.

Evolution has a long history of eating mailboxes. When a serious
bug commonly affects users and goes unfixed for years, one should
have quite a bit of doubt about the code.

Evolution also happens to mangle mail in ways that hinder full
participation in many Open Source mailing lists.

Really, this code is not a candidate for reuse.

It looks lovely, even has conversations (the one absolutely
 necessary feature of GMail).

GMail conversations are a poor substitute for real threading.
See jwz's site for the proper algorithm. (Google: jwz threading)

The GUI is also very simple, most of it is the WebView.
