Walter,

Please take more care in your communications. I have added on Gary and
Manuel to the conversation. I hope they as Design team get inspired and
inspire others to join.

Your personal attachments to the empty child old logo are for you to deal
with, not Sugar Labs.

Amazing. Your arrogance is beyond anything I have ever experienced. The
situation is anything but resolved. Have you not heard anything the rest of

Again, as both a member of the oversight committee and the design team, I
urge you to engage the design team instead of taking more unilateral
actions. Of course, you and Samson are more than welcome to do what you
want, but I for one don't understand how you can claim to working as a
member of our community and then make statements like "No offense Walter
but I was asking Samson not you.". I thought I was still a member of the
community.

Am all for open dynamics still I prefer collaborative dynamics rather
 than competitive ones.

A Sugar Design Marathon can be done if it is the Board will, by asking
all community members to synchronize for ~15 intensive days with a design
team from active volunteers and contributors.

I look forward to see Community working together productively.

 What do you think?

Samuel,

You are totally entitled your opinion.

Samson,

*Now that the feet are Sugar interface main icon the legal thing is
resolved. *

If Community wants to support the Sugar Design Marathon to upgrade it I
volunteer to help you lead the effort. I think we should start working on a
formal proposal to present to SLOBs asap.

Main objective proposed would be:

- To define in a collaborative way the adoption of a new main icon for
Sugar interface according to Sugar Labs acceptable License Policy
.

Specific tasks needed to do:
- Debug all learning and marketing materials
- Add yours here..

Calendar proposed would be:
Oct 1-15 2017

Please confirm/unconfirm your interes and/or suggest changes to my proposal.

Regards

Laura

 Samson,

Old trademarked OLPC logo is gone now.

If you think the one proposed by Sebastian is "not acceptable" you must
explain your reasons. For me it is.

 Very similar to Gnome logo

 Sugar Marathon Design??

We don't we do an Open Logo competition online and share with members
for our users to design good logo, reflecting what sugar is. Like how Sugar
 Labs logo came alive.

What a childish and unpolite response. I am very disappointed the way
Sebastian and you are behaving right now.

Don't you realize that is you against the community? You both think what
you are doing is more relevant to "protect" sugarlabs than what community
think. Scary.

I didn't wanted to reply earlier because i wanted to be sure what the
discussion was all about. I perfectly understand Sebastian worries. But as
walter mention Sugar Labs was a spinoff of OLPC and that is why the logo is
still present. Now, what i think we should do is to ask SLOBS if we want to
make these changes, make a good logo, the present one from Sebastian is
good but it is similar to Gnome logo. So we should calm them design a new
one that if SLOBS approve the chnages.

As for me, leaving the XO logo from Sugar is a smart move to marketing,
our goal is to make Sugar available to all users not just OLPC by doing
that we should have Sugar OS logo to make things neutral.

Sebastian, since you co-sign the agreement could you please take my
suggestions and make things official by take it to SLOBS make design open
for members to agree on a design because the current one for me is not
 acceptable.

Am all for open dynamics still I prefer collaborative dynamics rather than
competitive ones.

A Sugar Design Marathon can be done if it is the Board will, by asking all
community members to synchronize for ~15 intensive days with a design team
from active volunteers and contributors.

I look forward to see Community working together productively.

What do you think?

Samson,

Old trademarked OLPC logo is gone now.

If you think the one proposed by Sebastian is "not acceptable" you must
explain your reasons. For me it is.

Very similar to Gnome logo

As I have said earlier, am all for a Sugar Marathon Design. You in?

Sugar Marathon Design??

We don't we do an Open Logo competition online and share with members for
our users to design good logo, reflecting what sugar is. Like how Sugar
Labs logo came alive.

As for me, leaving the XO logo from Sugar is a smart move to marketing, our
goal is to make Sugar available to all users not just OLPC by doing that we
should have Sugar OS logo to make things neutral.

Sebastian, since you co-sign the agreement could you please take my
suggestions and make things official by take it to SLOBS make design open
for members to agree on a design because the current one for me is not
acceptable.

Hi Gonzalo,

As you yourself pointed out in #96, pull requests could be years to be
accepted. The linked "community rules", mention "reviewers" and
"maintainers" who in reality don't review or maintain anymore. Much less
have the guts to make a stand to protect users and downstream's freedom
or even care about it. Such a process have no meaning when /nobody is
responsible/ for the release. I fully assume responsibility for my
actions, as I stand by them and will defend them.

You are welcome to make a pull request and follow the "community rules"
to get it merged.

So if OLPC want's to put their trademark in everybody's face, then the
burden of forking should be on them (note: as they already do, out of
frustration with our "community rules" not working).

If we lack a release manager, then the "Development Team" should
communicate this. The recent release by OLPC of Sugar was a take over
which I won't allow, not while my name is in a contract, and, more
importantly, not while it goes against my principles to force a
potentially abused trademark into every project I love.

Samuel,
You are right (Laura Vargas is Sebastian Silva wife).

The first push from Sebastian of his own work is already a violation of the
Sugarlabs collaborations rules

https://developer.sugarlabs.org/contributing.md.html#
sending%20a%20pull-request

If Sebastian want a version of sugar-artwork with his own logo,
he can fork the repository. Sugarlabs repositories should be managed
according with the community rules
and looking for consensus.

I noticed that my PR review and merged by Ignacio, but it later was
reverted by Sebastian again. Looks like if I send another PR, this will
keep happening, and i just want to point out that this is VERY scary,
having one person unilaterally making these decisions.

This is wrong.

How would it be a violation? It is not a derived work. It doesn't even
look similar. Plus Sugar users have two feet, as most humans do.
GNOME foot icon looks like a "G". The Sugar feet logo is my creation*
and each foot has five toes instead of four.

I have seen that you and Ignacio have reverted my change.

/Have you determined that we have written permission to use this image?//
//
//Have you determined that our downstream distributor, and users, have
permission to use this image?//
//
//Have you determined that our downstream distributors, and users can
modify this icon in accordance to our Acceptable License Policy?//
/
/Also, are you aware of the SFC-Sugar Labs Fiscal Sponsorship Agreement,
which, is a contract that I signed when I was a SLOBs in 2011?/

This contract binds Sugar Labs, and, specifically, me, to make sure
Sugar Labs distributes only Free Software. If the XO logo icon can be
used "under certain circumstances" then it's not free as in Libre and we
- I - would be in breach of this contract. Therefore it is my right to
request Sugar Labs to make sure the above questions are answered
affirmatively before I can accept to distribute Sugar with this icon or
subject our distributors or users to risk of being bullied by a
copyright owner.

While I agree the way I did it was counter to Sugar Labs standard
development procedures, we know it could take years for a patch to be
merged since nobody has the motivation for doing it. I anticipated it
would be unpopular but I'm sorry, I feel it's necessary. I have brought
this topic up for years and after this time I feel I have earned the
right to act the way I feel is in the best interest of Sugar.

I will therefore make the corresponding pull request to set the record
straight again.

If this will have the positive impact of jolting some energy into this
community, then I'm all the more happy for it.

Thank you.

Regards,
Sebastian

Not Martin you are wrong.

The Urgency was Sugar users are not free as in "Libre" to use it.

Why do keep insisting in keeping it?

2017-09-13 Thread Sean DALY
There is zero urgency in changing the xo logo, which has been in Sugar
since its inception, with its use encouraged by OLPC. On the contrary,
rushing to a logo which may infringe the GNOME Foundation's trademark could
land Sugar Labs and the SFC in difficulty.

And in any case, any major branding change should at the very least be done
with the Design and Marketing teams, with SLOBs approval. It's true that
the teams have not been active lately (Dave Crossland is in charge of
marketing now), but it's not a reason to bypass stakeholders, and certainly
not a reason to bypass the SLOBs.

I distinctly remember we (Marketing & Design Teams) consulted with OLPC for
our booth roll-up and poster designs [1], and at their suggestion, centered
the globe icon with xo children around it - the early draft designs had a
large xo in the center and we respected OLPC's wish to design marketing
materials to resemble the Sugar interface.

If the feet logo could be a violation of the GNOME trademark, then lets
revert it, until a proper replacement is found (and if its really needed,
of course).

 Hi Alex,

Yes Sugar user interface needed to urgently get rid of any Trademark at
all. We can breath now :D

If you don't like the feet feel free to propose a new option or a
dynamic for our Community to accomplish a new one collaboratively. I
really like the cute little finger color's.

 See how it looks here:

 http://laboratoriosazucar.org/azucarizador/

There is still an urgent need for 111.1 Sugar release including this
 change.

Am not sure whether or not Sugar Labs has currently a release Manager.

Maybe if we propose a "Christmas Edition" for 111.1 I'll get to inspire
some heroes to help us out.

It would be ideal, if we can also add some other critical features
required like the elimination of the male/female initial question.

In the past, OLPC was amenable to the use of the xo logo in Sugar, but
asked we not use it in marketing materials without a formal co-branding
licensing agreement. [1,2]

The proposed feet logo is likely a violation of the GNOME Foundation
trademark, more info on their site [3].

why someone just decided to change the logo and merged it even though
several people asked him not to (without proper discussion, and not even

Was it ever applicable to our use in Sugar? Is it still valid? Note that "a

result in a weakening of the mark and loss of distinctiveness, which can

Re: [Sugar-devel] logo dicussion

2017-09-13 Thread Laura Vargas
Hi Alex,

Yes Sugar user interface needed to urgently get rid of any Trademark at
all. We can breath now :D

If you don't like the feet feel free to propose a new option or a dynamic
for our Community to accomplish a new one collaboratively. I really like
the cute little finger color's.

See how it looks here:

http://laboratoriosazucar.org/azucarizador/

There is still an urgent need for 111.1 Sugar release including this change.

Am not sure whether or not Sugar Labs has currently a release Manager.

Maybe if we propose a "Christmas Edition" for 111.1 I'll get to inspire
some heroes to help us out.

It would be ideal, if we can also add some other critical features required
like the elimination of the male/female initial question.

Regards

Laura

On this subject, I may have missed this, but where did the (IMHO awful)
"feet" icon come from, who approved its use, and was the board involved
with the decision? It seems a fairly central branding decision.
