this is an excellent question (-:
The need for calibration depends on the desired accuracy level.
- the default settings will produce a uniform vehicle fleet in regard to
the desired speed level. (easiest solution is to add the parameter speedDev
with an appropriate value for your case)
- even when using different vehicle classes (i.e. passenger and truck) the
fleet will be homogeneous within each class (no variation in length,
acceleration, lane-changing behavior etc). If you want variation you must
specify (or generate) a distribution. See
http://sumo.dlr.de/wiki/Tools/Misc#createVehTypeDistributions.py
- by default, all vehicles have the same emission class

However, in my experience the bigger point to worry about is usually the
modelling of the road network in urban areas. Traffic lights, turning lanes
and lane-to-lane connectivity can have an even bigger impact on accuracy
when importing a network from an external source (such as OpenStreetMap).
