Peter,
The 'Tree of Sonius' is basically not a vertical pole-style dial, but a
shadow plane dial. You are therefore free to arrange the hour lines any way
you like. So you might as well retain the tree shape. See the entry #11 in

A colleague who is writing an article on moondials has asked if there is a website which gives the times of the moon's transit on a daily basis, and preferably from the user's location. Any offers?

The tree of Sonius is made of two separate plates and calculated as you
suggested.
