A Pilkington & Gibbs Type 2 Heliochronometer (Serial Number 687) has recently
been stolen from Spetchley Gardens, Worcestershire, UK.
This instrument was originally purchased directly from P and has been
continuously owned by the Berkeley family.

An original P catalogue shows, under the heading "The Heliochronometer has been
supplied to":
The Rt. Hon. The Earl of Berkeley, Foxcombe, Oxford.
Clearly, the family are anxious to trace the whereabouts of the stolen dial.

Fortunately, the serial number is known (687), so should you come across any
reference to this dial, (auctions, eBay etc.) please be kind enough to inform
the current owner, Henry Berkeley.
He can be contacted at:
henry.berke...@berkeleyestate.co.uk

Many thanks

Re: The duration of the year

2017-02-19 Thread jmikeshaw

Doug,

If you lived 1000 years ago, in temperate latitudes, you would see the
sunrise and sunset azimuths move closer together as the winter solstice
approached.

They would then stop and move apart again.
Knowing nothing about why this happened, you would worry in case one
year they kept going and you would be left in permanent darkness.

To check, you would set up standing stones as markers for reassurance.
You might also set other stones to mark the summer solstice and even the
equinoxes.
If you counted the days between the recurrence of identical events over
several decades (requires recording of information across generations)

you would eventually come to the 365.25 figure.

But why are you choosing 1000 years ago?
The Egyptians knew this way before, because they had to be able to
predict the Nile Floods.

I understand that they used Sirius rising as their marker.

Very ingenious! For a flat wall, I think it's probably a north-facing wall

intuitive, the sun being North of the wall all day (I think?).

My understanding is that:

If your birthday this year is a Monday, then next year it will be on a
Tuesday, then on a Wednesday and so on - unless we have an extra day in the
year, in which case it leaps a day. Hence leap year.

Of course, you birthday has to be after February

Re: Sundial in BBC series

2013-08-19 Thread jmikeshaw

Yesterday (sunday) I saw the first part of the new BBC serie The
story of measurement on BBC4.
In it was a horizontal sundial of questionabvle design. The style
foot was situated on the XII mark and the shadow was crossing many
hourlines.

I can't imagine that BBC didn't do any serious research and used a
fancy sundial and even didn't notice that the shadows weren't
matching the hourlines.
Or did my TV having troubles? You never know in this digital era.

I've just had a look at the programme.
The design of the sundial face looks ok, the problem is that they have put
the gnomon on the dial face the wrong way round.

Man Wants heliochronometer

2013-05-24 Thread jmikeshaw
John,
He wants a sundial that can tell the time to “THE SECOND”.
He’ll be lucky!
Does he realise that the difference per second will be 0.0042 of a degree.
So you will be marking out the 24 hour time scale into 86,400 divisions.

I have quite a few heliochronometers and the best one I have (that is still
available) is a Gunning.
Despite the claims, I think the Pilkington Gibbs heliochronometer is only
accurate to 2 minutes, - it is only marked in 2 minute divisions and the cam is
probably worn after 100 years!
The PG Sol is marked to 1 minute and probably can (just) if you can find one.
We think only about 50 were ever made, and I only know of 9 – do let me know if
you have one.
My Aten is an early one that doesn’t have the later vernier scale.
I have a Silas Higgon (Bernhard type), but that’s only marked in 5 minute
divisions.
My Schmoyer Sunquest is a nice instrument, but is really a compromise
heliochronometer.

The Gunning IS accurate to a minute – you can’t really see the divisions
smaller than that.
That said, you really do have to know what you are doing to set it up:
accurately orientated – flat and level in all directions and set to exactly the
correct latitude.
I found that the latitude scale as manufactured wasn’t accurate enough.

Ken,

You wrote:
I take it the motor is to keep the hole pointed toward the sun.
It’s to keep the cylinder pointed in the direction that the sun would be if it
kept standard time.
I should have added that this device includes the longitude correction as well.

I'm unclear though on what's drawn inside. Is it a single curve of EOT as a
function of declination, or a family of curves?
It’s a very simple straight line grid with the vertical lines showing minutes
from standard time and the horizontal lines showing the sun’s declination from
the equinox position.

I hope that’s clearer.

I’ll see if I can find any photos and contact you off list.

Re: equation of time sundial

2013-02-04 Thread jmikeshaw
Ken,

I’ve found a couple of small photos of my rather crude device.
I’ve posted then in Dropbox at :
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tkxqw7x5mbr1axd/tYOlNAwT60

By coincidence, the 2nd photo shows the EoT is –7.5 minutes and sun’s
declination is –7.5 degrees.

I hope that makes things clearer.

Of course, it’s just really a reverse engineered heliochronometer where you
drive the alidade round using a 24 hour clock mechanism (widely available), to
keep the spot of light on the analemma.
However, I’ve used a graph of EoT and declination instead so that you can read
off the two figures directly.
Over the course of a year, the spot of light will trace out the analemma.

Re: equation of time sundial

2013-02-03 Thread jmikeshaw
Ken,

I think I made a device some time ago to do what you want .

A cylinder was tilted to the appropriate latitude angle and direction.
There was a small hole on one side of the cylinder which gave a projected a
spot of light from the sun on the inner opposite surface where there was a
graph which showed:
left to right – the equation of time
up and down – the sun’s declination.

The cylinder was driven round using a 24 hour clock motor, so the spot of light
remained apparently stationary except for changes in the EoT and sun’s
declination that were read directly from the graph.

Sadly, I don’t think I have it any more.

I’ve always thought that the “summer” side of dials like this should show
daylight saving time.
Unfortunately, the authorities refuse to change the clocks at each equinox, so
there would be some offset.

BTW, I have one of these “Tony Moss equatorials” and mine is adjustable for
latitude, but not longitude as someone suggested.

Antiques Roadshow

2012-10-17 Thread jmikeshaw
Thanks for your kind comments about my Pilkington Gibbs’ appearance on the
Antiques Roadshow recently.
My apologies to all for the slip of the tongue when I said “day” instead of
“year” when talking about the sun’s variation – it’s all too easy to get
flustered when you are in extremely unfamiliar surroundings.

I did spend quite some time on the day trying to persuade the BBC that a
programme about sundials would have universal interest, after all, they could
have ready access to the world’s experts via this list.
Sadly, they have not been beating a path to my door – well, not yet anyway.

Incidentally, they managed to make two shows from their visit to our village,
and my wife will be on next Sunday’s programme – she will be the one with the
very large Imari plate.

I have subsequently had an approach from someone who owns an “unknown” Sol
Horometer.
It is local to me, so I am going to have a look at it later today.
