Re: [SunRay-Users] What are sunray users going to do once Oracle stop support
The T610 do support a write lock, but they are not quite as locked up as the SunRay. I'm not sure what would be quite as close to a completely locked down platform as the SunRay. -- Leigh -Original Message- From: sunray-users-boun...@filibeto.org [mailto:sunray-users-boun...@filibeto.org] On Behalf Of Peter Astrand Sent: 13 October 2014 10:02 To: SunRay-Users mailing list Subject: Re: [SunRay-Users] What are sunray users going to do once Oracle stop support On Fri, 10 Oct 2014, Clift, Tom CIV NSWCDD, K55 wrote: > Our security requirements specify that the OS have a write lock option > if the client is not a true zero client. I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "true zero client", or how it would be defined. The Sun Ray DTUs are indeed very "thin", but this also means that they are less flexible. For example, they are locked to one single protocol and vendor. Most thin terminals nowadays are running Linux, thus in principle a "full" operating system. Various lock down approaches are being used. For example, the HP ThinPro normally runs with a file system which is write protected except for the path /writable. With the command "fsunlock", it is possible to write enable the rest of the file system. This allows for example installation of our ThinLinc Client package. Afterwards, you run "fslock". Terminals from IGEL, Dell/Wyse, Fujitsu etc uses a similar approach. If you are considered about the risk of storing local data, perhaps one solution would be to disable client file access? With the ThinLinc Client, the "Local Drive Redirection" subsystem is a separate process/binary, and if you simply remove that file, this feature will be disabled. Re: [SunRay-Users] What are sunray users going to do once Oracle stop support
Cutting off support doesn't make them non-functional. But does make them more vulnerable over time, and less likely to work with newer operating systems as they roll out. Also, they can't be re-sold, or used in new solutions for customers. It would be like if you went down to the computer store to get a new desktop, and they gave you an old PS/2 mouse and keyboard out of a dusty bin somewhere -- yeah, it'll probably work, but you kinda want new stuff when you buy new stuff. ;) On Wed, Oct 1, 2014 at 9:58 PM, Randy wrote: > I have a question of the Dell Wyse P25 Zero Clients can they connect to > an RDS server farm. It had seemed quite promising when we converted the first lab to Sun Ray devices six years. However things changed... a.. almost all our courses now use Windows based applications so there wasn't much point in first dropping them into a Linux Gnome session. b.. SAS licensing was expensive as we needed our own Windows Terminal Server type license instead of being able to use individual pc licensing which the university was already paying for. c.. USB flash drive performance was poor and it was hard to get the system to recognize large capacity flash drives (who is carrying around a 1GB flash drive these days?). d.. Oracle wanted us to pay a yearly software maintenance fee for each Sun Ray to be able to receive updates to the Sun Ray software. e.. Oracle announced there would be no further development of the Sun Ray technology. Last year we reverted to using pc's in one of the labs. As we had no budget we had to use machines that our central computing department had taken out of service. The difficulty of managing a pc lab had been one of the reasons for the switch to Sun Ray devices but this time we opted to use a slightly modified student image provided by our central computing department. SCCM is used to image the machines and push out changes so the management tasks are largely taken care of for us. This September we've gone with a Virtual Desktop Interface (VDI) solution in our remaining Sun Ray lab. We are using Dell Wyse P25 Zero Clients so we have many of the advantages of the Sun Ray's -- low power consumption, reliability and no noise. USB flash drive performance is good and logins are quick. I haven't seen any operational problems at all and the folks at the server end tell us that they are not seeing any noticeable increase in the load on their servers when a class is running. Unless something totally unexpected happens in the next few weeks, I expect we'll convert the pc lab over to Zero Clients in December. Our Physics department plan to continue operating a Sun Ray teaching lab. That's fine with us as it gives us a place for instructors who want a Linux based environment for their course. -- John Stewart -- Faculty of Science, Carleton University Internet: john.stew...@carleton.ca 613-520-2600x3707 "Good judgement comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgement." -- ___ SunRay-Users mailing list SunRay-Users@filibeto.org http://www.filibeto.org/mailman/listinfo/sunray-users ___ SunRay-Users mailing list SunRay-Users@filibeto.org http://www.filibeto.org/mailman/listinfo/sunray-users

Thanks. I thought the T610 had some sort of embedded OS which would be detected by a network scan and then would need patches/updates. I will research it a bit more to see if it will work for us. Re: [SunRay-Users] What are sunray users going to do once Oracle stop support
We replaced our Sun Ray lab with WYSE (now Dell) terminals. We got the D50D model with embedded Suse linux. They sell a management application, but it's not necessary. All you need is a DHCP server and a web server. Configuration and patching is done with plain text files served out from the web server. I had considered thinlinc, but Wyse was less expensive (no ongoing licensing cost unless you buy the optional software), uses a much simpler system, and has far less overhead. On the other hand, I have a mix of 2FS and 3plus DTUs (42 or so total) that are looking for a new home (for a reasonable price). Otherwise, they're getting recycled. Loved my Sun Rays, but have moved on. Seth On 10/01/2014 12:17 PM, Steven Gelsie wrote: > I was wondering what sunray users are planning once Oracle stops support > on the sunrays. I see ThinLinc is SPARC-only on Solaris - it might be very helpful if they were to do an x86 port - but given that the only other non-Sun Ray way to get a remote destop onto a Trusted Extensions box is to use VNC (see https://blogs.oracle.com/gfaden/entry/an_update_on_using_xvnc ), has anyone verified whether ThinLinc works on Sol 10 / SPARC Trusted Extensions at Trusted Path? (I'd give it a go, but don't have a spare SPARCbox to hand...) Cheers, -- Dave ___ SunRay-Users mailing list SunRay-Users@filibeto.org http://www.filibeto.org/mailman/listinfo/sunray-users
