"can you install ubuntu 8.04 on a 8 gb usb stick" without the "

I expect that
See www.minihowto.org - here you can see how to install ubuntu 8.04 encrypted,
and also how to make a backup using dd, so even your backup is encrypted.
Then you can run freenet from there - it works well - and the speed is ok.
