To "reseed" means to download a new seednodes.ref, which contains addresses of other nodes collected from the network. The easiest way to do this in windows is to run "Update Snapshot" from the start menu or (iirc) by right-clicking the systray bunny. However, unless you only run your node occassionally - in which case you can't expect it to perform well anyway - reseeding probably isn't neccessary. > As a last resort it says to contact you. 0.5 has acknowledged problems, primarily less than optimal specialisation/routing and the fact the network is open and therefore harvestable (possible to build a list of who runs nodes). Development is currently underway on 0.7 which is pretty much a rewrite, and hopefully will make progress toward addressing these. Bob

Re: [freenet-support] Inserting data in Freenet
No, and no. Firstly, with classic routing, we did associate the closest node with the key. Secondly, 0.5 no longer uses classic routing (it uses NGR). Thirdly, 0.7 will use a different algorithm again. :) NGR: http://www.freenetproject.org/index.php?page=ngrouting 0.7: http://freenetproject.org/papers/vegas1_dc.pdf On Sat, Dec 03, 2005 at 09:56:41AM -0800, Tony wrote: Hi all, I have a question about how nodes insert data in Freenet. My understanding is that when a node inserts data, data is stored in each node along the insertion chain until the node with the nearest key is reached. Along the way, each node's routing table is updated so that the inserter is associated with the new key (this is from Ian Clarke's 1999 white paper on Freenet) It's the last part I don't understand. Shouldn't the node with the nearest key (the one at the end of the insertion chain) be associated with the key in each node's routing table? This would make it easier for requests to locate data at the correct node and it would prevent people from identifying the inserter. Thanks, Tony __ Yahoo! DSL ? Something to write home about.
