I think this may be fixed in current testing build (update.sh testing or 
update.cmd testing on a command line in the freenet dir). But the fix throws up 
a NullPointerException with a different trace, in Freemail itself, at least for 
the user I was talking to...

Obviously it asks you, but after that does the node use the correct language? 
And does it pick up the system locale in the first place? IIRC the language

Looks like your database has corrupted itself. Delete it. :(
