Depends on your operating system :
On Windows, your should have a shortcut to update.cmd.
On Linux, go in freenet's directory and run './update.sh' as a normal
user (not root).

That Firefox problem often happens when there is a .parentlock file in
the profile directory. It should disappear if you remove that file.

Anyway, maybe there is a problem with firefox but how is freenet going ?

Why would you want to do that ? You would only be able to see what your
direct friends have in their store. Are yu trying to create an old
fashion darknet where only a few people have access to it ?

I'd say that he installed sun's JVM but didn't choose to use it with

[freenet-support] Usability testing on Windows XP

2008-05-29 Thread Julien Cornuwel
Hi,

Just had the occasion to follow a beginner through the installation
process via Java Webstart, on Windows XP. Here is what I noticed :

- The installer is now signed with a Thawte certificate, which is
accepted by default. That's good !
- The two phase install confused the user. He thought the install was
finished after the first one and didn't understood the programm was
actually downloading freenet in the second one.
- He was again confused when the browser spawned up saying "Installation
successfull" and the installer was still donwloading stuff.
Additionnaly, that page was in English despite the fact he chose French
in the installer. I had to tell him he had to finish the installer and
then, click on the link to the first-time wizard.
- The wizard was quite straightforward and he choose default values,
which happened to be good for him, IMHO.
- Just a detail : every shortcuts (except Browse Freenet) in the menu
came with the same default icon. He was disapointed and I had to tell
him it was irrelevant and everything was fine.

Maybe we should only spawn the browser at the very end of the
installation process, when the installer closes and Freenet is up and
running. And maybe we should open directly to the wizard page, which is
i18n-ed.

Hope this is usefull...

I read that a few month ago, people were only able to connect to 120-150
nodes on the 0.5 network.

Is it possible that this is the actual size of the 0.5 network ?

Just upgraded to the latest Ubuntu, which uses Firefix 3. I've got the

But, after I created a "Security exception" to accept this certificate,
I've got another error (sec_error_bad_signature) and the browser stops here.

Anything I can do except generating my own valid certificate ?

It's quite common in France. At least in big cities.

On Freenet, I never saw more than 65-70 KB/s.
On the web, the best I saw was downloading and ISO from my ISP mirror,
it was 1.5MB/s.

[freenet-support] Freenet's impact on online gaming

2008-04-29 Thread Julien Cornuwel
Hi,

I'm sure a lot of users are interested about that. I've got 128KB/s
upload and Freenet limited to 40. Freenet runs on a dedicated computer
so resources consumption is not an issue. For normal operations, I've
got no problems. But when it comes to online gaming, weird things happen :

Other players see my ping as normal (a bit high but nothing I should
worry about) but I've got lags and sometimes, I completely loose the
connection. The game freezes, other players yell at me, I stop Freenet
and everything's back to normal.

For now, the only solution is to stop the node each time I want to play.
Not a good thing for the network. I can try to reduce Freenet's bandwith
even more, but I don't think it will help much.

Any thoughts ?

IF we assume they don't use sophisticated attacks, they can't either.

But I'm not sure it's a good idea to assume they don't try... The
Darknet connection mode is here to avoid that particular risk.

You can download the latest trunk version here :

and overwrite your freenet.jar with it.

Or you can just wait for next release and update manually

My point of view is that Freenet has always been a work-in-progress. The
0.5 version you call "stable" was under developpement just before
becoming unsupported. It has never been stable : google a bit and you'll
find scripts for restarting it every night because of its "unstability".

Did you try both versions ? If yes, you should have noticed that they
are quite as stable and that 0.7 offers far better performances and
AFAIK the same security level.

So, why should the developpers of the project push newcomers to an
old/buggy/unsupported/user-hostile network while they are working on
another one that is *already* better ?

I'm not sure stopping linking it on the website would help it have more

AFAIK, the same is not equal to better. Maybe I'm wrong.

wouldn't bet on something that's only been around for a few months vs.
something that's been slowly improving for...well, longer than I've

Anyway, I won't argue on that because the decision is not in my hands.
The fact is that 0.7 is the only supported version and that it is the
future. Not linking to the current version and gripping to the old one
would be an interesting kind of suicide for a project that's a constant
work-in-progress...

[freenet-support] Bug report : update scripts are empty

2006-05-02 Thread Julien Cornuwel
Hi,

I don't know if it's a known bug but this morning, when I tried to
update my 0.7 node, I found that both update.sh and update2.sh were empty !

Could someone put them on downloads.freenetproject.org so I can retreive
them safely ?

This is probably due to a bug in Java. There are problems with the NIO selector

this, I think I posted about it a while ago but I don't remember if changes were

Some of us think about it but I see 2 problems to that :
- We don't know each others and can't trust one not to be part of DST

In which case there will be weak segments of the darknet. That does not
undermine the whole structure. The mainstreamers can still use the
opennet. I expect there to be some cross-recruiting. But the intention
is for the darknet to be separate from the opennet. People who happen to

I've never met but I would be perfectly happy to connect my node to. But

[freenet-support] Integration in 0.7

2005-09-17 Thread Julien Cornuwel
Following the post named "Hypothetical question", I'd like to expose you
a practical case : the French community. Stop me when I'm wrong.

We all know each others only by Freenet and it is said that it isn't
enough to form a darknet together, correct ? So we'll have to stay on
the opennet which is less secure.

If, by a kind of miracle, I meet someone IRL that I trust and is
interrested in Freenet. We make a darknet together and... we're
completely alone ! We won't even see the opennet, so we'll have no
chance to make new connections except IRL.

If the French Community decides to make a Darknet, we'll maybe be able
to make connections to non-french users we know (but only in Freenet,
which is a very BAD trust relationship) and to join the big darknet. But
newcommers, how will they find us ? We won't be able to see their posts
or sites.

Suppose Freenet 0.7 becomes illegal in France (what it already is,
because of the AES 256 encryption). The opennet won't be secure for us,
but we won't be able to join the darknet. What could we do ? Keep on
using 0.5 ?

As I understand the theory, Freenet 0.7 will be great for pre-existing
resistant-like networks, which already know each others and don't need
to speak to other people. It will also be great for Freenet devs, who
already know the large community of alpha-testers.
But it is fully useless if you want to create from zero such a network
with other good-will people, what is exactly what we'll have to do in
the west during the next years.

I hope that I misunderstood something and that 0.7 will be usable by
other people than the devs and very organised networks. Please, reassure
me. Or explain me that I should stop waiting for 0.7 and accept the idea
that the only working Freenet will no more evolve.

As far as the above goes, please read the responses to the other post.

I did. So you confirm my understanding ? 99% of current Freenet users
won't be able to join the darknet and will have to use opennet.

Suppose Freenet 0.7 becomes illegal in France (what it already is,
because of the AES 256 encryption). The opennet won't be secure for us,
but we won't be able to join the darknet. What could we do ? Keep on

The opennet will probably be more secure than 0.5. But both are very
easy to shut down, because they can be very easily harvested - all nodes
can be found easily, meaning they can be blocked, attacked, etc.

That is why I'm searching a way for someone who is neither a member of
alpha-testers/Freenet-devs, nor a very organised terrorist/paedophile to
join the darknet.

Do you think it would be possible for nodes in the darknet to see what
happens in the opennet ?
Maybe a special kind of nodes that acts as a gateway between the 2
networks : it wouldn't endanger the anonymity of thoses who are in the
darknet but it would give them the ability to see the newcommers and
eventually decide to invite them.

My opinion is that a resistance-network has to be closed tight when war
is on. But it needs to create itself before that. So if some people
could choose the become some fuses between open and dark, the darknet
would remain safe and be able to recruit.

I'm affraid that if this fonctionnality isn't enabled in Freenet, people
will do it by other ways (internet forums, mailing-lists, weak encrypted
emails, etc.) which are way less secure than Freenet. Or worse, some
will decide to publish their keys and allow anyone to connect to the
darknet through them...

[freenet-support] Adding a new index to the gateway interface ?

Hi,

The devs could consider adding the DBR site called "L'annuaire" to the
default bookmarks. It's a french-CPfree-index that seems to be reliable.
I think it could help french newbies to discover Freenet and make some
of them stay with us.
