Re: [freenet-support] Please, help.

2016-09-13 Thread Stephen Oliver
Hi Peter,

There should be an uninstaller in the Freenet installation folder, which should
be in your home folder unless you installed it somewhere else. Running the
uninstaller should take care of it for you.

Alternatively, you can do it manually: make sure Freenet isn’t running, then
delete the folder where it was installed.

You may also need to remove the cron entry that starts Freenet when your
machine boots. To do that, open a terminal and type “crontab -e”, then
carefully delete any line that refers to Freenet.

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet log and what it says

2016-09-13 Thread Stephen Oliver
Hey Robi,

There are a few potential causes, but I would suspect that your VPN wasn’t
actually connected the entire time you had Freenet running (this is a common
issue with VPNs), and during the time when the VPN wasn’t connected, your VPN
software didn’t block internet traffic, which allowed that traffic to go out
over your normal internet connection from your real IP address. Some VPN
software does try to block traffic whenever the VPN connection goes down, so
that would be something to ask your VPN provider about (or find one that offers
that feature if yours doesn’t offer it).

The thing that says “you are wide open to your immediate peers” is unrelated,
it’s simply a warning that you were using Freenet in opennet[1] mode, which
doesn’t offer as much protection against monitoring as darknet[2] mode.

Re: [freenet-support] Freenet Support for legacy versions OSX?

2016-03-12 Thread Stephen Oliver
Hi,

10.6 will be impossible going forward as Java 7 is going to be required to run
Freenet in the immediate future, and the minimum requirement to install Oracle
Java 7 is OS X 10.7.3.

There’s nothing else preventing Freenet itself from working, however our
installer/menu bar app is designed for OS X 10.8 and won’t actually run on
earlier versions, so installing a NEW node on 10.7.x would require some very
minor manual work (basically copy the install files from inside our installer,
edit 2-3 lines in the setup script and run it).

If you’re able to run 10.8 on your hardware I would highly recommend doing so,
as even 10.7 is completely unsupported for security patches by Apple (and
Google Chrome too, as of next month).

If you would still like help getting a node running on 10.7.x feel free to stop
by our IRC chat room[0] and say hi, I would be happy to help :)

Hi,

You should be able to download the tray app again and run it, it will ask you
if you want to install again if it can't find your installation.

Hi Brian,

Does this happen when you try to start Freenet manually (via terminal) or
is it simply failing to start when you reboot your Mac?

Would you be willing to come in to the Freenet IRC channel[1] briefly so I
can help you figure out what's going on?

Re: [freenet-support] Hello - my Freenet is dead

2015-11-08 Thread Stephen Oliver
Hi,

Installing Java 1.8 *should* have replaced the Java preferences panel
completely. So I don't think Java 1.8 actually installed properly, both
because Freenet is clearly using 1.6, and because you can still see Java SE
6 in your preferences pane. That old Java Preferences pane should have been
completely replaced by the Oracle Java Preferences, which you don't seem to
have.

My advice is to reinstall Java 1.8 again, download it from [0] if you need
to, and then restart Freenet from the web interface. The warning you see
about Java 1.6 should then go away. If it doesn't, try restarting your Mac.

The problem with the tray icon being "dead" is well known, it's been fixed
but the fixed version hasn't been included in the installer yet. Sorry for
the trouble! :)

Re: [freenet-support] puzzled

2015-11-08 Thread Stephen Oliver
Did Freenet install successfully, no errors? If it installed properly then
it just isn't running for some reason.

Since the rabbit icon is broken at the moment, you can start Freenet
manually:

1) Click the search icon in your menu bar
2) Type "terminal" and hit enter
3) When Terminal opens, type "cd /Applications/Freenet" (if you installed
Freenet somewhere else, type that location instead)
4) type "./run.sh start" (including the dot and slash), you should see
something like "Starting Freenet 0.7..."
5) try opening 127.0.0.1: again

Please feel free to come in the chat room for more help if you can't get it
working: https://webchat.freenode.net/?randomnick=1=freenet

Re: [freenet-support] freenet doesn't work on osx

2015-11-04 Thread Stephen Oliver
Hi,

This is largely an issue with the way Java currently works on Mac OS X, but
it's easy to solve.

You'll need to install Apple's Java system package [1] as well as Oracle's
Java 8 package (which you probably already have). For the moment, some Java
applications don't quite work properly without both. Then you should have
no trouble installing Freenet wherever you like on your Mac, and it will
still run with the most current version of Oracle Java that you have
installed.

I'm working on a replacement for our Freenet installer that will avoid
issues like this in the future, however it hasn't been released yet. Sorry
for the trouble!
