I had something simmilar before switching ISP, for me it's DNS that was going
down when
Freenet was on (or other P2P apps). To test it try and see if when you have the
problem
again you can access http://216.239.59.103/ if you can then it's dns, if not
then it's
completely different problem. (Note: sometimes after running for a long time i
couldn't
even access ip addresses directly any longer, so do it as soon as the problem
begins).

I have tried changing the max number of connections as low as 10, but

I'm getting lost once again. First i don't understand why that is not the
point, since if
you simply not cache the data if it was requested locally, then if it somehow
can be
proven that your node has requested the block, and it is not in the datastore,
then you
were the requester; that compromises anonymity, not increases it. Second, i
don't see what
you have meant by the social engineering with nim/frost.

Well, not necessarily. Here is one way to approach the problem:

1. Increase the probability of a forced decreace of HTL in the range of 15-25.
2. Keep it the same for 5-14
3. Actually have a larger chance of increase of HTL between 1-5.

Pseudocode:

If DATAINLOCALSTORE Then Return DATA

If HTL > 25 Then HTL = 25

If HTL <=25 AND HTL >=15 Then
If RANDOMNUMBER > 0.9 Then HTL = HTL-2
Elseif RANDOMNUMBER > 0.7 Then HTL = HTL-1
End If

If HTL <=1 AND HTL <=5 Then
If RANDOMNUMBER > 0.9 Then HTL = HTL+2
Elseif RANDOMNUMBER > 0.7 Then HTL = HTL+1
End If

Return GETDATA(HTL-1)

:End Pseudocode

As far as i understand it such thing already exists, i'm just saying that if
you play
around with numbers you make HTL=1 attack useless (since there is 30% chance
that the
request was passed to another node, and about 15% chance that it was passed to
more than
one). Of course if you make the numbers too large you risk requests going on
forever (or
nearly so).

I have heard somewhere that in the 0.7 your node might chose not to give a

[freenet-support] Zero Point Seven

2005-09-19 Thread Volodya Mozhenkov
I know that you probably hate people asking the same questions over and over
again, i have
been reading these discussions and explanations for quite some time, but can't
find an
answers to the questions that interests me.

Let's say I trust John and Jill. I create my own litte darknet to distribute
highly
contravercial vegan recepies, which happen to be illegal in my hypothetical
meat-eaters-only country. Then John, decides to invite Jason into the
darknet... and Jason
is an undercover meat-eater. Will Jason be able to learn about my vegan
habbits? If not
(i.e. he will only be connected to John) then John will be the only point of
entry for
anything Jason wants to insert/retrieve from the darknet, is that correct?

You have also mentioned about joining two different darknets together. Do you
mean that if
Jason in our situation is a member of a vegetarian (rather than vegan) darknet
then
vegetarian darknetters will be able to receive the content of vegan darnet? Can
that be
stopped? (ie Can Jason say, "Yes, i'm a part of two darknets, but i don't want
any
crosspolination between the two").

How easy is it to run opennet and darknet at the same time? Will that require
two separate
nodes running or can i run one nodes connecting to both nets?

How easy would it be to set up a gateway between a darknet and an opennet?

Well i think this is about all.

Hi,

No reseeding does *not* delete the datastore, it only deletes the
seednodes.ref file (or the file that you've specified in the
freenet.conf). If you haven't ran the freenet for only a week you might
not want to reseed.

Also, you might want to do this in the freenet.conf file (which is in
the directory to which you've installed your freenet) there is a line:
doAnnounce=no
change it to
doAnnounce=yes
make suret hat there is no '%' in the beginnning of the line

Do not worry about the size of the datastore too much (but yours is too
small), i've ran the freenet for more than a year, and it's around 40
gigs now.

Also, (just want to check something), after you do the announce thing,
let your node run for an hour or so, and then go to
http://localhost:/servlet/nodeinfo/networking/ocm
and see if you are getting incomming connections, with your datastore
this small it might be that you are not connected to anybody.

Do not worry about the size of the datastore too much (but yours is too
small), i've ran the freenet for more than a year, and it's around 40
gigs now.

Also, (just want to check something), after you do the announce thing,
let your node run for an hour or so, and then go to

http://localhost:/servlet/nodeinfo/networking/ocm
and see if you are getting incomming connections, with your datastore
this small it might be that you are not connected to anybody.

hi!

i am about to give a presentation of freenet at a conference in

papers on the subject beyond what is linked under Papers at
freenetproject.org?

i will post my paper when ready on this list, or any other, if you find
it appropriate.

thanks in advance,

Sorry, i can't help you out there, have you tried asking on the frost
boards, somebody might be able to help there. But i'm looking forward to
seeing your paper.

Why would doAnnounce be set to no?

I don't know. (honestly i have thought for about 5 minutes how to answer
this question, this is the truest answer).

For example i set it to no, after seeing that my node is integrated well
enough.

Re: [freenet-support] Too much Route not found despite of DMZ

2005-08-20 Thread Volodya Mozhenkov

temp dormail wrote:

I have installed Freenet on a Windows XP computer and used the ref file that comes with
it. And even thoug I have DMZ turned on, letting all communications thrugh my router,
that route not found error is still there far too much! Some sites are
browseable, at least, I can use the indexing services, at least most of them. But I
cannot browse further. Ome site was sucessful though, the one with freenet tools for UNIX
on it.
Sometimes, the Data not found comes up instead, as annoying as the other.
I have ADSL 512/256 and 512 MB of memory. Service pack 2 i installed.
Everything is very slow despite of that my CPU is Pentium 4 2.4 GHz

Even the README-file that should be reachable from the serverlet isn't
available!! (Data not found)

This is very annoying and since Freenet was intended to exterminate censorship,
it's totally meaningless as long theese errors are there. RNF and DNF ARE to be
considered as censorship, even if they depend om bugs and other things! Please
help me or fix this if that are bugs!
Or are freenet currently being taken down by hackers?

It's because you've just installed it. Give it some time and most RNF
will go away.
