Try enabling Java Web Start first. I believe this is on some sort of
control panel / settings menu somewhere.

I assume you are trying to install Freenet by means of clicking the
big green Install for Mac button on the Freenet Project website.
Apparently, that does not work on your system. Lacking further
information, I cannot judge on why it does not work for you.

Please follow the (somewhat more advanced) installation instructions
at [1]. You might need to follow those for Linux/UNIX if those for Mac
don't work for your system.

I have been having trouble installing Freenet on my Mac.

I have Mac OS X 10.6.8 with a  2.4GHz Intel Core 2Duo Processor

I tried installing, but came across a few problems detailed in the attached 
screenshots.

No, java is required to install Freenet. Dunno what your problem is, can you

Reason: Service did not respond to signal



Previously if I was unable to connect, I was able to click on a beta version
that worked properly.  In build 1280 this option does not exist.



What must I do to enable Freenet  to work properly.

Sorry, this is a known problem, but it is hard to fix as we are unable to 
reproduce it on demand. Could you please tell us:
- What OS exactly you were running it on - 32-bit, 64-bit, Vista, etc?
- Send us your wrapper.log (in the directory you tried to install Freenet to).
- If possible, check the permissions on that dir - does Local Service have 
access to it?

You can uninstall Freenet from Control Panel in Add/Remove Programs.

Please try reinstalling after that. It's possible that whatever broke might be 
fixed now. Please let us know either way. If it doesn't work, please tell us 
exactly what happens - maybe send a screenshot.

Hi, I just installed Freenet and every time I open it, it opens in Firefox.  
I use both Firefox and Chrome and the install said it would open in Chrome  
incognito, how do I make Freenet default to Incognito instead of Firefox on

On Windows:  control panel = add/remove programs

On Mac, Ubuntu, and other Unix-based systems: There should be an 
uninstaller  program that uses the 'next-next-next-finish' procedure, 
stored in a sub-directory of .../freenet/, called 'uninstaller'.
If you dont find the uninstaller (e.g. if it wasnt included when you 
installed Freenet), you can just remove the whole Freenet directory.

Just out of curiosity, may I ask why you're uninstalling?

Is Safari set to use a proxy? That's the first thing to check. You should be 
able to tell it to not use the proxy for 127.0.0.1. If that is not the 
problem, then find the directory you installed Freenet to. Is there a

If not, please let me know, and I suggest you run "run.sh start" in that 
directory (from a command line e.g.).

Did it open a browser in the setup program? Which had the welcome page, then 
you clicked on the link to the wizard, and it failed to connect?

Did it open a browser in the setup program? Which had the welcome page, then 
you clicked on the link to the wizard, and it failed to connect?

No, that's not the reason.
I have set the service to start manual, so i start it after mountung the DC 
volume.

The path S:\Freenet\bin\wrapper-windows-x86-32.exe -s S:\Freenet\wrapper.conf' 
in the service is also correct. I just don't know what could be wrong.

running Freenet on an encrypted volume (using TrueCrypt) I had to set
its start mode to manual, so that it won't be started before I had the

Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 running on labtop with AMD 
Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MT-30 processor.

The install program suggests the execution of:

1) net helpmsg 2221
2) net helpmsg 2185

the results(translated from spanish ;)):

1) User name not found
Explanation
You have specificated an unknow user name
Action
Check you have writted correctly the user name. To show a user list from the 
security database, write:
NET USER
(after run, a users list appears, what i have to do?)
2) The service name is not valid
Explanation
You try to activate a service that is not configured at the system
Action
Check you have writted correctly the service name the setting information of 
that service with the option Services at the Manager servers

I don't know what to do, i can guess the installation isn't able to 
configure and set the program to run itself as a service but i don't know 
why.

There's currently a mirroring problem affecting 0.7
freenet-cvs-snapshot.jar downloads it might be the same that does
this.

XP Home behind a firewall.

(BI tried installing from a limited user account to my user folder. However, I kept getting "Download of nodeconfig [or any other file for that matter] failed: Retry?". Seeing as how this is the installation itself, I cannot play around with any settings to fix this issue. Why do you need an internet connection to install the program? Why not just bundle the files required? As it now stands, I cannot install Freenet's software to my computer.

You can always install Freenet by hand - its not that difficult.
However, I beleive there should be an easier solution.

Two reasons. First of all, information about the nodes you can connect
to initially (they're called seed nodes, hence the seednodes file) is
very dynamic, so it has to be fetched from the Freenet project website
on install. And second, Freenet node versions sometimes change very
frequently, so this procedure makes sure you always get the latest version.

It doesn't. All downloads are over regular HTTP. Check that you can
download files from Freenet website through your browser (try
http://www.freenetproject.org/snapshots/NodeConfig.exe). If you can't,
then it couldn't be connected to the installer. If you can, then you'll
likely have to download and install Freenet by hand.

Also, I've found from experience that sometimes Freenet project's site
is somewhat slow in responding, and it confuses the installer - maybe
there's some sort of too short a timeout somewhere in the download
code... So, if you're sure you can download files from Freenet website,
you can try to install Freenet several times over the course of about a
day - sometimes it does help.

[freenet-support] Installation under a proxy

Hello. We're working on a uni project where we have to create an anonymous
messaging system. As we're still in the early stages, we haven't gotten
around to seeing the source code, but we can't get freenet to install on the
uni computers. On windows XP, we tried to install it, but what happens is
that it tries to connect online before it installs. There is no way of
proceeding the installation if it can't access the internet. In order to get
external http access here at uni, we need to enter the proxy.pac address.
Unfortunately the current installer doesn't seem to see that information
from the internet options. Is there any way of overriding this function that
needs to access the internet in order to install?

First, try

locate -r 'bin/java$'

I see this:

Try this command:

ls -l /philtr/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2./jre/bin/

I suspect that gives an error message.

I don't think the period after 1.4.2. should be there, because I
happen to know that people at Sun would never make a directory
name ending in a period.  It just isn't done, even though there
is no rule against it.

So try this:

ls -l /philtr/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/bin/java

You should see something like

-rwxr-xr-x1 philtr   philtr  24564 Jun 20 05:04 java

Once you have found your java executable, fix PATH.  Try

PATH=/philtr/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/bin/:$PATH

and then 

java -version

This works until you exit the shell where you fixed PATH.
So either change your .bash_profile, or put the PATH into
the script.

 I then inserted a '#' in front of the JAVA... statement, still no luck.

Not something to do.  The _ is just another letter in the variable name.

JAVA_IMPL=`java -version 21 | head -1 | cut -f1 -d' '`

That line means the following:

Set the variable JAVA_IMPL to the string following the equal,
after expansion.

The stuff after the equal means:  execute the pipeline and
replace the backquotes and all inside with the output of the
pipeline.  The pipeline executes 'java -version', i.e. it
runs java with the option asking it to print the version.
It assigns stderr to the same file as stdout (21), and
pipes the output into the head -1 command.  That
discards all but the first line of the output.  The
single line goes into cut -f1 -d' ', which takes the first 
field delimited by blanks.

So JAVA_IMPL is set to be the first word of the first line
output by java -version.  In the case of Sun's 1.4.2, that
is java.

But I don't see where JAVA_IMPL is used.  It isn't exported,
and it isn't reference in this script.

 I'm attaching a copy of 'start-freenet.sh' just in case I'm missing a 
 critical statement further down in the file. 
 
 Of course I might be in the wrong directory altogether. The other

Hmm.  Should have read all the way down.  You found the right
bin/java above, but made a typo in your PATH= command.

Actually, I find that the two files are identical:

cmp /usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_02/bin/java \
/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_02/jre/bin/java

produces no output.

 
 While this is headed to the ethernet, I'll be playing with:
 
   PATH=/philtr/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2/bin/java:$PATH
   export PATH
 
This should have worked.

Rumor has it that 1.4.1_02 works better with freenet.  I have
both, but use 1.4.1_02.

The missing file is java.  (java is a JRE (java runtime environment), but
it's not looking for a file called jre, it's looking for a file called java)
Rather than editing javapath and replacing it, why not just symlink
/usr/bin/java to wherever you actually have java installed?  Much easier in
the long run.  If your system is already configured to symlink /usr/bin/java
to /usr/bin/jsdk-1.4.5.2.1.3.4/dfadsfasdfasdf  or whatever then no config
needs to change.  Also means it's much easier to upgrade to newer versions
of java in the future, just change the symlink to point at the new
installation of java.  Rather than, say, having to update the config files
of all of your applications which use java!

I can only take a guess at what it might be.  Freenet requires a Java 
virtual machine to run.  Do you have one on your computer?  If not, you 
will need to get one.  You can get Sun's from http://java.sun.com Look for 
the downloads section and then download and install a Java Runtime 
Environment.  I believe the latest one is 1.4.something.

Hi! I just d/l freenet- initially, as a node, since i have dsl and and leave my comp on 24/7. however, i don't know what an ip address is, and my log indicated that that was a problem immediately after installation. is there something i could do to be a node, or contribute more to the project?
-also, since the installation, my comp has been moving slowly, even after i exited freenet. do you know a solution for that?
