Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to write idiot proof instructions on
setting up port forwarding given there are an awful lot of different routers.
Fortunately most of the time UPnP handles this automatically, so most people
don't need to bother. Also, Freenet will work to some degree without forwarding
ports.

If you need to forward the ports then an alert will show up on the homepage
including the exact ports. These vary from node to node so I can't tell you
them but they will be UDP. Also I suggest you visit the "Internet Connection"
page, it gives you this information at the top of the page. For example mine
shows:
* Darknet FNP: 24374/UDP (used to connect to trusted peers i.e. Friends;
forward this port if you can)
* Opennet FNP: 37024/UDP (used to connect to untrusted peers i.e.
Strangers; forward this port if you can)
* FProxy: 8888/TCP (this web interface)
* FCP: 9481/TCP (for Freenet clients such as Frost and Thaw)
* TMCI: 2323/TCP (simple telnet-based command-line interface)
You need to forward the first two ports. However you should not forward 24374
and 37024 because these are my UDP ports - they are chosen randomly and are
different for you. These port numbers are (more or less) unique to your node so
you should not mention them on anonymous forums on Freenet e.g. FMS.

No. Well it depends on the firewall rules I guess. Like I said, this stuff
varies a lot. It's hard. Non-geek users should not have to deal with it.
What we need, ideally, is for incoming packets on the 2 UDP ports to be
forwarded to the computer running Freenet. UPnP will normally set this up, but
it may not always work.
