If you want to connect with open network, you don't have to add it
manually to that file. In future shr-settings will have WiFi manager
based on FSO dbus calls.

wpa-supplicant is also not working, when I ran the ifup eth0 command

Hopefully it will use wpa-supplicant and not go off and do something
I don't have WPA or WEP encryption on this network,my neighbours like
to crack it and get free wifi, I do have MAC filtering on and I know
the phone can connect to it because it worked in 2008.8. I did turn
on the WIFI radio on before trying.

Use wpa-supplicant even when you have open network. It is really
usable with network roaming ;)

The downside so far looks like I have to add networks to it by hand
and that can be a pain.
