I this permanent? If yes, it'd be good to create a forward to take the

permanent, some kind of announce would be useful. As far as I know,
there is code that the developers / users would definitely want to
backup before removing the whole projects.openmoko.org.

The change is going to be permanent, as the current installation is
unmaintained for about a year and poses severe security risks.

Anyone who's interested in backups should contact gismo and/or roh, they will
then provide snapshots of the requested information (e.g. cvs/svn/git
repository)

If somebody steps forwared to take the existing information and put all of the
repositories + downloads online somewhere (read-only) for historic reference,
I'd be more than happy to provide the respective account/data.

it is in my oppinion reversed).

I think the scrolling is not yet 'fixed' in settings, like it's in
people. Keep waiting and things are fixed :)

   2) after I close paroli, I cannot access the settings menu any longer.
It is only on my installation?

No, it's not only your installation: settings is part of paroli. No
paroli - no settings.

   3) the back button in the settings should be bigger as it is hard to
 touch with the finger.

I think this will be also fixed any time..

 b) 1 suggestion: Can we have more things in the settings? It would be great
to be able to turn on/off the GPS also.

Why this? GPS is turned automatically of by FSO when GPS is requested
by a application. It's easier than you think :)

 c) when unregistering from the GSM network or closing the paroli, does it
turn off the gsm also (to save battery)?
what about putting Wifi in inactive. does it turn it off ? (to save
 battery again).

i think the wifi is turned off, don't know about GSM..

I had only few less important issues till now:
 a) cannot simply disable the suspend. I tried to put suspend time -1 in the

/etc/freesmartphone/oevents/rules.yaml and put instead of suspend ssuspend

Yes, there's something wrong in the image now. The only way to disable
suspend is to connect it to recharger/computer over USB.. I hope
this'll be fixed during the next 24 hours..

 c) in both midori and firefox, if you set it to full screen and diable the
menu bar, there is no way to close the application. Reboot is the only
 option.

Or ssh in and kill the app. The same goes for some PDF viewers: full
screen is a no-go..
Please let the app devels know this..

 d) did not find how to put the landscape view (especially for browsing)

Not supported yet, but xrand should do it (command line)

 e) did not find any web page on the web with step by step mp3 support (I
know it is not supposed to be available in the officail feeds)

Right, not supported.

To cut long story short: intall the unstable and have fun.

 Hi list,

Getting a bit too confident, I decided to change the PIN (default )
 of my SIM.

 1. Paroli doesn't require you to re-enter the PIN, to make sure you made
 no typo's.

 2. Paroli doesn't give feedback on incorrect old PIN values, so you
don't really know for sure the PIN was actually changed.

 3. On startup, unlocking the phone with your PIN is not very verbose. An
incorrect PIN results in another 'enter your PIN' screen, but nothing
like 'PIN incorrect, only 2 tries left'.

 4. When the SIM is blocked (incorrect PIN) nothing shows in Paroli. It
doesn't tell you that the SIM is blocked and that you now need to enter
your PUK code. Having already tried a few times, I asked a colleague for
his unlocked phone to really make sure I wouldn't block the SIM by
 entering incorrect PUK codes.

So, does anyone dare reproducing this, ;-) ?

Thank you David for sharing your experience! I don't think we'll soon
find anyone ready to test this (maybe with old SIM cards..). Could you
please report all this to http://www.paroli-project.org/trac so it
will not get lost in the mail archives. I think this is something
quite important to be fixed..

Joerg, I also tested this by lowering Mono to 72 with alsa-mixer on my

like sitting on a motor lawnmower during a call.

Maybe this is something different than the Buzz Issue, but it improves
sounds for the other party a lot.

I've experienced that on some settings the background noise of my
environment (=cars / computer fan / air conditioning / ...) is
amplified a lot when I'm silent and the person I'm talking to can hear
it. It isn't easy to recognice what's the source of the noise but I'd
say there's some tunign to do to make this work. So I don't think it's
the actual buzz but amplifying the environment.

really is the problem, then this complaint may be moot.

Yep, A5 has the buzz issue (and the badness depends on the GSM frequencies)

 4. The UI seems sluggish, typing, bringing up menus, etc.

The latest unstable has some great updates there waiting to be
released as testing image :

 6. (parolli) Call Log/SMS does not elegantly handle the prepended 1 in phone
numbers.  This causes contacts without the prepended 1 to not be associated.

I think this is reported in trac somewhere.. I hope it'll be fixed soon..

This release is a good start.  When these bugs are ironed out, it'll be a
great foundation to build an app library on.

Indeed!!

How do I get to settings?

Go to the home-screen (the one with the big clock) and hold the
AUX-button pressed for 2 seconds.

How do I get Illume?

Open settings, click on display and then hit profile (once) and be
patient, after some rumbling on the screen you will have the standard
illume look with paroli in windowed mode. It may be necessary to

Yes, AFAIK, Paroli uses connman to run WLAN. You might want to report
it here: http://www.paroli-project.org/trac (hmm.. I guess that it's
not the distro nor FSO but Paroli in this case so paroli-track would
be the place to report)

David: I absolutely love you working and testing on Paroli, keep up
the good work!

btw. if you happen to use IRC, feel free to join #paroli, not many of
us there but it's task-focused so some good developement happen there
:)

GPS/SD issue hardware fix vs. software fix

2008-10-19 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
Hi!

Some months ago we had this GPS time to first fix issue that was
handled with a software fix. However the new Freerunners ship with the
hardware fix (you can see a small capacitor in the connectors of SD
card).

Is someone able to give us some test results hos much better the hw
fix is? TTFF with two FR's where one has and the other one doesn't
have the HW fix, using the same software.

 no, there isn't yet.
it's still in experimental and no estimate given when it will enter at
 least unstable.
but i strongly doubt the usefullness of kde on a limited device like the
fr, the user experience will be similar to sparky mat's reports on using
 gnome, i gather.
there's a GSoC project on porting kde to maemo, dunno how far it got ...
 http://www.kdedevelopers.org/blog/2892

I'd say far enough:

http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=199495#post199495
http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/3546

And yes, I guess that KDE4 out-of-the-box will not be that nice to use
but maybe it can be customized to fit portable devices better.. And
hey, if it's possible to install KDE(4) on Freerunner, why not give it
a try! At least you can tell your friends you've been running KDE4 on
your phone to get some credit, 'cause that's what it's all about,
right :)

I suppose it's called keylock or something like that, not calibration
