I installed the latest version of Pidgin for Ubuntu and when I sign into AIM
and let all the contacts pop up saying they've signed in I try to text someone
like I normally would using AIM on Windows and it just comes up saying error,

For OS X use the Mac Pidgin build or Adium (uses libpurple too)

No, it is not possible currently to use Pidgin on any (currently popular) phone.
Unless Apple changes their developer agreement, neither
