I was under the impression that the patch was already added to Pidgin.
Is there any compelling reason not to add it?
Can you please provide a patched versions for users that lack the ability to
compile Pidgin?

adding the patch to the source and recompiling Pidgin.

to the accounts (see in Accounts->Manage Accounts... From the buddy list)
and set to Online/Available in the buddy list?

Hi Cedric,
This looks like it's crashing in the pidgin-encription plugin. Try
uninstalling this plugin (or disabling by removing
/usr/lib/pidgin/encrypt.so) and try again.
You might also want to pass the backtrace onto the authors of that plugin
to see if they can offer any advice on any workarou
