XMPP behaves exactly as Richard stated. When ddg shut off, for
example, I moved some of my ddg contacts to my own XMPP server and was
none the worse for the wear.

Instant messaging systems aren't interconnected in the way that phone
companies are. A better analogy is that, if all voice phones cease to
operate, you can still send paper mail to your postal address in Texas.
Some IM services use addresses that only they can use, like the phone
number, others allow you to use the equivalent of looking you up in the
phone directory every time.

Except it's federated, right? I run and use my own server, but I also
have buddies who use other servers.

If my phone company in New Zealand goes away, that doesn't mean your
phone number in Texas is now useless - I can get a new connection from a
new company, and call you as before.

That is not entirely true. We also cache a local copy, which is in
~/.purple/blist.xml. This is the copy that Richard is referring to.
Likewise, the logs are stored locally in ~/.purple/logs/.
This is in addition to whatever server behaviors may be in effect.

Buddy list is a list of accounts on the server. If the server goes off-line,
those accounts go off-line, and are no longer available, until the server comes
back up.

It’s like a telephone landline account. You have your landline account through
the phone company. If the phone company goes down, sodas your landline. The
only way you could keep that landline would be reported out and take it with
you, something it’s not available with user accounts on servers.

If you use Google as your box server, your Google account will always be active
only because Google is always available and online.

That assumes the friend is (was) on the server that's down. I assumed it

If the server is down, there will be no point in locating the account ID.
It will be inactive.

I would recommend doing a Google search (not Bing) on the user's
information, to see if you can locate an alternative account they may be
using, so you can regain communications with them.

Recovering Log or Buddylist

2017-11-08 Thread skitzo

Hello,

I am trying to recover a friend's jabber username that I used to talk to over
Pidgin. I am trying to locate log files to find it or perhaps a buddy list if
it is somehow saved. I no longer have access to the jabber account because the
server is no longer active. Any ideas?
