When I click it, I expect it to launch the link in a new browser tab.

Well, thanks to all for your pointers.
I finally got it to work doing the following:
Go to Password manager, remove the saved password for any SMTP server
Edit the SMTP parameters and uncheck Use name and password
This now works just fine.
