Hi,

You should be able to download the tray app again and run it, it will ask you
if you want to install again if it can't find your installation.

I saw your name on the Freenet site. Would it be okay if I have you share
some basic info?
I just moved to a new computer with Win 10 (from Win 7), and now I cannot
get diddly squat to work.

At one time I had Freenet... AND Frost working on my PC, then I suffered a
head injury (true), and I goofed
up the Frost part. That was bad enough... but I am pissed at how screwed up
Win 10 is; shoulda never left 7.

Freenet is one of MANY things that no longer work for me.
If this is a bother to you, feel free to tell me to get lost.

I think by default, freenet/fproxy only allows access from the
localhost (ie. 127.0.0.1) interface, so you have to go into the
advanced options and explicitly allow your machine/subnet access.

okay, I've done that a couple times now and my settings don't take, and I
still can't see fproxy from the other machines in my lan. I tried setting
both the machines that can access and that have full access to my lan,
192.168.1.1/24 and it apparently didn't like the / because it gave me an
error. Something about java number format (sorry I don't have the exact
error anymore). So I set it directly to the host I wanted access from:
x.x.x.101, and I apply the changes and there is no error, but still no
access. I look in the /var/freenet/freenet.ini file and those changes are
not there. I change that file by hand and restart freenet and the
changes disappear as soon as freenet starts. There is a wrapper file that
starts it with a config file in /etc/ however I don't see any variables
there that look similar to anything I'm changing.

Also, the localhost addr in those fields ends with ,0:a bunch of 0:'s) and
:1.

does the ,0 field still need to be at the end of the ip addresses? Is it
like a terminator?

Yes, something broke in your logger settings, just delete them in freenet.ini.
The next version of Freenet will deal with this better.

Yes. Freenet basically is a free (as in free beer) web hosting service,

stored redundantly across many *other* nodes -- not your own. (Freenet

Additional question though: during the Frost installation it said that because
there were apparently more than one node in force, the persistence would not be
available.. What does this mean and how can I possibly check the number of
nodes registered. In effect, as fas as I know,, I only have one Freenet

It is possible that the board you were sending on frost is under a DoS attack,

As for FMS, it's some weird WoT thing, you many need to rate some people's trust
lists up or something in order to see your own messages.

problem. However, when I try to send a message to a forum (Test as a
matter of fact...), it does appear in the inserted list, but NOT on
the forum itself afterwards (even after more than 24 h)...
I also have the same problem with Frost. If I post to a board
(Newbie-help would you believe..) my message stalls in the outbox until
a message states that it was not possible to send it. Also, may be for
the same reason, all of the boards indicated in the left window show 0
messages. If i click on any of them, nothing happens, even I if I hit
refresh... For information, when I installed Frost I checked the box
running Freenet .05 instead of .07 because I am on Opennet and not
 Darknet..

I can't speak for Thaw or FMS but the problem with Frost is that you
made the Freenet 0.5 choice when installing Frost. Regardless of
whether you're using Opennet or not you are still running Freenet 0.7
and should select 0.7 during Frost's setup.

The 0.5 network *IS* still active but you are running 0.7 and will
never be able to connect to it unless you install 0.5

Many many thanks if you can help me.

by the way, same thing with Thaw... No messages sent nor received..

I posted a possible solution to this a few weeks ago if you can't find
any other, here it is again:

To all those who are getting this problem:

I found a solution to at least get Freenet running. The problem seems to
be with the wrapper (i.e. wrapper-windows-x86-32.exe command in the
Freenet\bin installation directory). The wrapper controls the
installing, removing and start and stopping the Freenet service. It
seems this, on some systems, does not install the service properly. My
solution involves running the service as a console application using the
-c switch.

Method: Open a command box. CD to your Freenet\bin installation
directory, and type the following command:

wrapper-windows-x86-32.exe -c ..\wrapper.conf

The command box will then show you a whole shed load of info messages as
the Freenet service runs (this can actually be quite useful to see what
is going on). Note that the tray icon now doesn't do anything as that
was controlling a proper service, we're now running it as a console
application and the command box remains open while it is running.

To stop the service, select the command box and type CTRL-C, this should
cleanly shut the service down.

I don't know the implications of permissions but this certainly works
when logged in with admin privileges.

If you want to create a batch file to do this put the
following 3 lines in your batch file. You can then either place this
batch file in your startup directory or start it manually:

REM start freenet service as console application
cd C:\Program Files\Freenet\bin
wrapper-windows-x86-32.exe -c ..\wrapper.conf

Mark.

I guess you're winz victim.

You do have Freenet running and connected to strangers, of course.
You did not unpack frost.jar.

Doesn't it come with readme files and frost.bat?
If not, make one in the app folder.
Mine reads
start javaw -Xmx192M -jar frost.jar %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7

I gave Frost a bit more memory. What the %1 etcetera does, I dunno.

Plz reply below the rest, and also: react to *all* I wrote. Now it looks

Though the makers may be trying, Freenet does not come in one-button
shape, nor does Frost. That ain't likely to change today, so it's either
an effort on your part or no FN4u.

You might want to try #freenet-es on irc.freenode.net, people there speak
spanish and know about freenet. But there aren't many people there at the

Freenet 0.7 doesn't install a rabbit icon. But it should make some icons on
the desktop and the start menu. What operating system are you using? (Linux?
Windows?).

The node warns you about dangerous MIME types when it doesn't know how to make
that kind of data safe. It might cause your browser to do bad things and give
away your identity (for example with a PDF). You can either take that risk,
find a way to make it safe, or you can not download the file.

directly available.
Shall I put this folder in the Freenet folder?
You could, but you might consider putting it in a separate folder, maybe
pyFreenet in the same parent folder as the Freenet folder, though you
could put it just about anywhere.
The name I put on Freenet folder . maybe its too long.

You can rename the folder you extracted pyFreenet to as pyFreenet
doesn't generally care where it's installed.
As I alredy had a folder named Freenet I gave it the name Freenet-prog.

In DOS, with the keyboard I have now, I cant access that folder as I
dont know the ASCII code for that little worm I need to shorten the
 name to DOS 8.3 format.
So, maybe it can cause problem.

By In DOS, do you mean at the Windows XP Command Prompt? That
supports long filenames.

can read write and execute as user (non-root) in thet directory and
run the start script using the following commands :

 ./bin/1run.sh
 ./run.sh start

Then, fire up your favorite web browser and point it to
http://127.0.0.1: : if you get to a freenet page, your freenet
 node is up and running.

AT THIS STAGE THE INSTALL IS DONE

That's what I did-created a directory in my software folder and
unpacked the archive. The permissions needed no changing, and then I
pasted the commands into Terminal. Didn't work.
Besides, you still haven't answered my other questions.

It's probably something simple. Don't panic!

do this:
ls -lh ./bin/1run.sh
you should see whether the file actually exists and its size. If the file
doesn't exist
then it's possible that you are running your commands from a wrong directory.
Make sure
that you change your directory to whereever you've installed your Freenet to.
If the
filesize is somehow 0, then something was wrong with your download/install
process. Try again.

You are far from the first person to have a problem with getting node
refs for Freenet 0.7. I'm gonna say what I tell everyone else: Don't
 use 0.7. It's pretty much experimental. There's a good reason a large
number of us are holding on to 0.5, a big one for me being that it's a
true opennet instead of a riskier, pseudo-opennet. In other words, you
don't have to mess with any of this getting node refs and IRC crap.

 http://freenetproject.org/download-old.html

0,5 can be a solution if anonymity is not a primary concern. The reason why
it's hard to
find refs with 0,7 is to make it nearly impossible for somebody who wants to
compromise
your identity to find yours, with 0,5 your node shouts your reference to the
whole world
as soon as you start it... with no way to stop that.

You can also check out I2P, it is quite nicely worked, but has slightly more
compromising
features than even 0,5 (such as it's easier to identify the person by analysing
the timing
of the availability of the resource).

Anyhow, chose your options carefully.

Free your mind and seek the truth.

You are talking about 0,5 right?

Firstly make sure that 0,7 is not running at the same time. I think 0,7 can
handle if 0,5
is already running, but it doesn't work the other way around. Also what were a
bunch of
errors? How much memory does your computer have (freenet needs quite a lot...
especially
after your database will start growing).

want to
connect to FreeNode. Connect to it and then type /join #freenet-refs (without

You are not annoying, everybody had to start some time (even if some don't
remember that).

You've probably installed the software correctly, but you need to point your
browser to
http://localhost:/darknet/ there you will probably see that you have no
peers (unless
you've already added some).

The intention of freenet is that you find people who already run freenet and
connect to
them. If you know somebody who runs freenet ask them to exchange references
with you. Your
reference is available on that same page (closer to the bottom) and you must
give your
reference to the persons who you want to connect to (only to those people,
nobody else)
and get their references.

In the event if you don't know anybody who runs freenet already, you can go to
#freenet-refs IRC chatroom on the FreeNode.

If i was still too techie for you let me know i'll try to help.

Make sure you are using FreeNode server on the IRC, and if you want to exchange refs then
the channel you want to join is #freenet-refs
#freenet is for discussion about freenet itself. If you've installed mIRC i suspect that
its default is to connect to DalNet.

It takes a little bit of time for your node to be integrated. Just keep it running (with
frost on and with Automatic Updates on in frost) as long as possible. Stuff will speed up
and get better.

Also increase the size of the datastore to at least a few gigs if you want your node to be
reasonably popular.

You should be able to remove Freenet through the Add/Remove Programs
part of the Control Panel, Freenet will be one of the items listed
there.

A more crude way to remove it would be to delete the C:\Program Files

better.

Ouch. This is an ancient build. You got that from Sourceforge didn't
you? Those are really old files (Someone really ought to update them)
No wonder you can't connect. Here's what you do:

Stop your node.

If you are run windows, click StartProgramsFreenetUpdate Snapshot
If you are running *nix, run update.sh

Download seednodes.zip from http://freenetproject.org/snapshots and
unzip the file. Put the seednodes.ref (from the seednodes.zip file)
inside your freenet folder (overwriting your old file)

Start your node and go to the open connections page. Refresh this
for a few minutes until you see some connections active. Hopefully
this should get you going.

Thanks for the heads up

I ended up trashing that ancient version of freenet, and went for the
latest release instead.

I've started it up, and already things seem to be closer to a desired
outcome, so I'll be patient.

Also, I received this message, as seen below this line. Should I be
concerned about it?

$ os.arch = ppc

INFO: Native BigInteger library jbigi not loaded, reason: 'Dont know
jbigi library name for os type 'Mac OS X'' - using pure java

Anyway, I seem to be getting somewhere, ie, 'caveat lector'

Regards.

Bruce

That just means you don't have the optional native math libraries
installed. Freenet will work fine without them. I don't think it is
very easy to get those installed either so I wouldn't bother.

Happy freenetting!

P.S. The current node build is 5105, make sure you are running that.

RE: [freenet-support] HELP!

2005-07-09 Thread Nicholas Sturm

Assuming you are on Windows version...
You probably still have freenet running. Check for an icon in the tray associated with freenet. Click it and try turning it off. If that does not work try ctrl-alt-del and end any task that seems to be a part of freenet. Then try deleting the freenet directory. That usually solves the orphan problem. In the future try avoiding the running of experimental wear on a production machine (i.e., you principle machine you need to have in working condition).

The estimated probability of success if we could route all requests to

Even the error message tells you what to do:

 $ tar xfz freenet-latest.tgz
 $ cd freenet
 $ sh start-freenet.sh

in your case, since you 'unzipped' the tar to your Applications/Utilities
folder, you'll need to cd Applications/Utilities instead (or whatever
the path to your Applications/Utilities folder is ... I would imagine
you will find it easier to just follow the above instructions so that
everything goes smoothly)

If you do the above it should all be pretty simple. Also are you

Okay, perhaps you're in the wrong folder. Please show me the output of

If the files shown are not there, then:

That should return something like:
/home/toad/freenet/123456/start-freenet.sh

Now switch to the parent directory:
cd /home/toad/freenet/123456
(in our example; remove the /start-freenet.sh from the end).

Then try ./start-freenet.sh or bash start-freenet.sh.

Re: [freenet-support] Help, please.

2004-01-01 Thread benny
I have just started a new node on my SuSE box without any problems.

1) Download tarball.
2) gunzip/tar -vxf
3) cd freenet
4) ./preconfig.sh
5) edit freenet.conf (add ipAddress, and storeSize)
6) forward the freenet listen port on my NAT box
7) ./update.sh
8) ftp over a seed nodes file from another machine
9) ./start-freenet.sh

Note: If you're not running behind a NAT box or firewall, you can skip step 6. You
can most likely skip step 5 too, unless you want a larger datastore (which you should
do, I use storeSize=4096M). Last I heard there was some issues with default
seednodes, so step 8 may be the key with a new install at the moment. I don't know of
a graceful way to getting a fresh seednodes file at the moment tho.

Re: [freenet-support] help

2003-11-07 Thread dave
Well, at the very least, I would not confuse the user by putting a button
on the window that claims it moves something to the clip board.

It's not confusing, it just doesn't do anything. It would, if it was
finished, but it isn't finished. It's not hard to add that functionality,
it would take about twenty minutes which I don't have.

 Updating
the viewer is fine if you don't deceive the user by suggesting that data
can be moved to the clip board.

Updating the viewer is fine, irrespective of whether or not the Copy To
Clipboard button functionality works

Copy selection to clipboard is very
deceiving. The fact the window is gray (rather than white) does suggest
that it is only a viewer, but the window does allow marking which also
suggests one can do something with that which is marked.

Yes - this is because you can.

  And one can
 using
ctrl-c, but one cannot mark enough usually to completely answer a
 question.

That's true, but that's a more difficult fix. Um, that's why I suggested
adding a 'launch in editor' button, but no-one's yet followed up with
saying whether it is a good or a bad idea.

Unfortunately users (vs developers, perhaps) should hardly be expected to
know enough to select very meaningfully from the clipboard.

Select very meaningfully from the clipboard ? Do you mean, like,
'paste' or what?

 I know it is
developmental, but if you WANT ordinary users to use the system with the
hope of building an adequate system database, it does need to be
 relatively
easy for those novices to help.

Which is why I ... oh never mind.

Maybe I could add a button which also loads it into an editor of your
choice. The point is View Logfie is essentially a window doing a tail
 of the logfile.

In fact, if we have 'ordinary users' using the system, then we wouldn't
really need a logfile, and we certainly wouldn't need to ask them to copy
and paste bits to the mailing lists. But that functionality's useful for
the rest of us. Just because there is a view logfile button doesn't
mean ordinary users need to use it. Which is why I would usually suggest
someone mailing us freenet.log, rather than trying to copy+paste from the
logfile viewer. Which is a silly thing to try to do, really.

Re: [freenet-support] help

Keys in freenet are like files on the internet.
So the Data not found message you're getting is similar to a 404: Page
not found page you might see from time to time on the internet. There's a
bit more to it, but you can think of it like that.

Is your freenet running well? Can you retrieve *anything* or does
*everything* come back with data not found? How long have you been running
freenet for (it takes some hours to adapt to the network the very first time
you use it - this is for obvious reasons).

A lot of useful information can be obtained by opening the browser to
http://127.0.0.1: and clicking on Open Connections. Are there any
connections (Is your node able to connect to other nodes?) - if so, how many
inbound and how many outbound?
If you click on Node Status Interface (under Internals) on the freenet web
interface page, and then click on the topmost Node Reference Status link,
what does it say? How many node references are there, what does the
Connection Attempts say, etc

As a last resort - is there anything scary looking in the logfile
(freenet.log) like big flashing ERROR messages?

I don't show any of those links on the web interface
page. This may be the problem thoughWhen I click
on the switch to advance mode link in the upper left
hand corner. It says that I am in transient mode and
 cannot switch to advances.

Hm - if you're in transient mode then that's why you're not getting incoming
connections.

If you look in the option
windo it show that I am not in trabnsient mode...and
when you go to the for geeks only tab and check the
boxt o change those setting on the first tab, it
doesn't work the transientg mode and running 24/7
check bixes are alwqays grayed out.

You can't actually change the 'transient' mode setting - it's detected
automatically. If your computer is behind a firewall then you're probably
transient. Transient means that computers on the internet cannot connect to
your computer. This is because your firewall is not letting them!
So to fix this you will need to make sure your firewall allows traffic to
your freenet port. If you're not running a firewall, or firewall software,
or you're connected directly to the internet through a modem, or your
network or LAN doesn't have a firewall, or gateway, or NAT or anything like
that, then it should work. Otherwise whatever is stopping freenet receiving
incoming connections will need to be reconfigured. Obviously external
hardware devices like these cannot be reconfigured by the Freenet software!
You'll need to configure them yourself.

I don't know. I've heard really great things about
Freenet project, but I'm getting kinda skeptical.

It's great, honest

I've let frenet runn for days and it still brings
nothing up...it either looks for a page for ever or I
get the error that I sent you earlier.
it seems that ther are a hell of a lot of extra
configureations just to gert this thing to work. Why
doesn't it configure cortrectly from the installation?

For most people and system configurations, it does. But you still didn't
tell me what's in your logfile. I can't really do much to help fix this if
you don't do what I ask!

When I try to display log from Rabbit Menu I get display. Mark is
possible, but only within the given page. One can move the segment and
then mark in another section. A somewhat deceptive process if one need to
pass along more than one page of the log. The Button at the bottom of the
window that shows the log file (end of, if box checked) does nothing with
the marked contents. One can use ctrl-c to copy, then open an editor to
generate a file and then use ctrl-v to put the marked material into that
file, or one can open a email window after using the mark and ctrl-c and
put a segment into the mail message. This all seems very primitive, but
either the Rabbit-display log works for everyone but me or fixing what
looks like a useful method for selecting and forewarding log information is
considered one of those user friendly functions that does help get freenet
working.

One can go to the directory when freenet is installed and open that file to
copy some contents, or send freenet.log as an attachement, or perhaps zip
that file and send the zip copy on. For novices, that may not be the
easiest (search does not work on my 2K opsys unless I am Administrator,
which might be a problem to others using 2K Win) if one does not know where
freenet was installed.

The system works pretty good for gurus, but not for many of the remainder.

I don't show any of those links on the web interface
page. This may be the problem thoughWhen I click
on the switch to advance mode link in the upper left
hand corner. It says that I am in transient mode and
  cannot switch to advances.

Hm - if you're in transient mode then that's why you're not getting
incoming
 connections.

If your computer is behind a firewall then you're probably
transient. Transient means that computers on the internet cannot connect
to
your computer. This is because your firewall is not letting them!
So to fix this you will need to make sure your firewall allows traffic to
your freenet port. If you're not running a firewall, or firewall
software,
or you're connected directly to the internet through a modem, or your
network or LAN doesn't have a firewall, or gateway, or NAT or anything
like
that, then it should work. Otherwise whatever is stopping freenet
receiving
incoming connections will need to be reconfigured. Obviously external
hardware devices like these cannot be reconfigured by the Freenet
software!

I can't really do much to help fix this
if
you don't do what I ask!

I've been trying to get this Freenet to load the websites but
its not doing it at all. I have been leaving it on for a long
 time now.

Right now I have 2.40ghz, 768DDRRAM, and cable modem.

I would like to know what I should set my settings to so I
can get the best results possible and make the pages load
more faster, because I havent been able to get any to load
except the main page which takes forever to load the little images.

not really correct; there is one form to open up for any IP:
mainport.allowedHosts=*

ditto.

Thanks for the correction. I think anyone who did this would be
remarkably unwise unless their firewall blocks ports and 8889 TCP

Those remarkably configuration are called Public Freenet Gateways.

If the unwise people that manage them are not so unwise,
they tunnel the port and jail the jvm, or use disposable
host. If they are really unwise, simply put their resources
at risk to give a service to others.

Or the deniability of the datastore content is no more a
central point of the security model of Freenet ?

Anyway, to enable people to use Freenet from an Internet
cafe' anywhere in the world, without local node installed
on the host, or without host at all it's a Good Thing (tm), IMHO.

Re: [freenet-support] Help!

2001-06-12 Thread Dave Hooper

This seems to be a very common problem so I've decided to look into it.
The Sun JRE 1.1.8_007 does NOT install files named java.exe and javaw.exe
which is the general assumption for a java runtime environment (JRE)
Instead, the Sun JRE 1.1.8_007 installs files named jre.exe and
jrew.exe. The part of the freenet installer that looks for a Java runtime
environment only searches for java.exe and javaw.exe and hence the Sun
JRE 1.1.8_007 is NOT found because it uses incorrect filenames.

Because of this incompatibility I recommend you use an alternative JRE.
For example, Sun JRE 1.3.1:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-windows.html

There is a remote possibility that a future freenet installer may be tested
against Sun JRE 1.1.8_007 and that it may be modified to seek for jre.exe
and jrew.exe as alternative java interpreters.

Re: [freenet-support] help

2001-06-08 Thread Dave Hooper

In the next couple of days we are hoping to put together a new freenet
installer that FIXES all known issues with the windows Freenet.exe ('white
rabbit' systray icon) application, including (but not limited to) the
following:

o Rabbit icon sometimes 'locks up' and you can't get the popup menu to
appear
o 'Configure' doesn't work
o Spaces in filenames don't work
o Restarting freenet sometimes leaves it in a 'Freenet Having Problems'
state

And a bunch of others besides. This should make freenet on Windows a easier
thing to use (and debug!) as any outstanding issues can then be tracked down
as either
o Freenet java problems
o Installer problems
o Network (e.g. firewall) problems
